Harold J. Leeman, 93, died November 25, 2014. Born near McGrath, MN., May 23, 1921, the son of Efner and Edith (Julian) Leeman. He was an Evart resident from 1927-1940 and since 1948, has lived in Lansing. Mr. Leeman served as an officer in the Marine Corps in WWII. He was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star in action on Okinawa. Mr. Leeman graduated from Evart High School in 1940 and attended WMU prior to his military service and later attended and graduated from MSU in 1950. He was an avid Spartan fan.
He was employed at Michigan Surety Co. and later the State of Michigan (Insurance Bureau) where he had served for 21 years at the time of his retirement in 1983. Mr. Leeman was active for many years in the acolyte and crucifier program at Central United Methodist Church in which he was a member since 1948. He was also involved with the Junior Baseball program in Lansing, managing teams for Glass Pharmacy, Larry Cushion and Mike’s Shop Rite.
In retirement, he was active in the senior swim program at Waverly East Intermediate School as well as a participant in the Meeker Genealogical Society. He was also active in the Capitol Area Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America and did volunteer work for the American Heart Association. He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Virginia and sister Helen Caulk, and sister-in-law Charlotte Sayre.
Survivors include: daughter Diane (Bernard) Abbott of Marshall, and sons Neil of San Mateo, CA., Kevin (Kim Schul) of Kendallville, IN., Keith (Renneda Thomas), and Harold Jr., both of Lansing; 3 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; sister Doris Bailey of Kalamazoo; nieces; nephews; and cousins.
Cremation has taken place. A Memorial service is to be held on Wednesday, December 3, 2014, at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes Lansing Chapel at 11:00 am with visitation one hour prior to the service. Visitation will also take place on Tuesday, December 2, 2014, at the funeral home from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Memorial contributions can be made to Meals on Wheels, 5303 S.
