Hazel Madonna Dewey

At age 97, our mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great great grandmother, sister, and friend peacefully passed away of natural causes April 13, 2015. The Lord has taken Hazel to be with her husband of 64 years, Alfred H. Dewey Sr. (2001).

Hazel was born April 11, 1918 in Webberville, Michigan, the daughter of Milton and Gertrude Olive (Williams) Cole. She married Alfred in September 1936 and together they created a wonderful family.

Hazel retired from the State of Michigan, Department of Treasury in 1987. She loved to play cards, cook, and spend time at senior centers. She sang in the church choir for many years. Hazel was loved by everyone who met her and she will be greatly missed.

The greatest accomplishment was the family she created with Alfred: Alfred (Penny) Dewey Jr., Robert (Alta) Dewey, Gordon Dewey, and Ellen (Dewey) Fisk.

Also surviving to cherish Hazel’s memory are 19 grandchildren; 39 great grandchildren; and 2 great great grandchildren; many brothers and sisters and their families; Robert (Louise) Cole, Ruth Richardson, and J.B. (Dixie) Cole. She is also survived by a large extended family of cousins, nieces and nephews.

Hazel was preceded in death by two daughters, Janet (Dewey) (Dean) Marsh and Carol (Dewey) (Randal) Bryson; her parents; and sisters, Arlene (Bob) Wines and Ida (Dorr) Howe.

A funeral service will be held Friday, April 17, 2015 at 1:00 pm at First United Methodist Church, 3827 Delta River Drive, Lansing, MI 48906. The family will receive friends on Thursday, April 16, 2015 from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, 900 E. Michigan Ave., Lansing, MI.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Hazel’s memory to Whispering River Assisted Living, 11491 E. River Dr.
