"Write! Write! Write! You have a great many good things to say!" This is the message Mr. Stroup penned in my yearbook at the end of the '90-'91 school year. This wonderful man who invented dirt (or so he claimed) had a profound effect on a shy sophomore that preferred dreaming and writing to just about anything else. In his American Lit class, I was introduced to some very fine gentlemen (and their ivy)- Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, and Carl Sandburg. He made Steinbeck come to vivid life. And when we read Frost-oh! Such joy!

"I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference."

Thank you, Mr. Stroup, for sharing your love of language, and of literature, and of life with all of us. You will long be remembered with much love by the many students whose lives you touched. And many thanks to your family for sharing you with us all.

my Dad taught me to ask for help in a hardware store ,or a library.  Stand up straight & project,so the back row may understand every  word of the verses...& to stay friends with people who grew up to embrace disco music,or the Republican party.  His CD of ABBA-Gold (after all the Gilbert & Sullivan) stays in his Impala - & for all the singing from the Methodist hymnal...he knew all the words to "Fernando" & "take a chance on me"   Heavenly choir Dad - sing well for Jesus,say "Hi" to Mom...stand up Maryann

I knew Jim from his coming into the QD on Mt Hope for years--would see him and his wife often when we went to Bob Evans.  His sense of humor will be missed.  Prayers and thoughts to the family and those he touched

I was a student of Mr. Stroup's for American Lit. and Speech class. He was an amazing teacher who truly had a passion for teaching. He was one of my favorite teachers and will be missed. RIP Mr. Stroup and my condolences to the family.

Thank you Mr. Stroup for being an exceptional educator who had a passion for his profession.  He was an amazing mentor and I loved having him for classes. It's a rare gem to find an educator who truly cares about his students and enjoys sharing his knowledge with them every day.  Mr. Stroup was that rare gem.  He will be missed.

Mr. Stroup took a shy, scared, shaking junior high girl who couldn't stand in front of a crowd in speech class and turned her into someone who would later spend her life speaking and being in public and even majoring in theatre. He did it by encouraging confidence, self worth and ever giving up. I owe much of my career to him. A wonderful man whose life touched many. He will be missed. My sympathies to the Stroup family.

Mr. Stroup never let me give less than my best effort!  My Seniot year I had him for Speech Class!  It was one of favorite classes of high school!  His encouragement helped me gain the confidence I needed to get through high school, move onto college and lead to me being able to teach others!  God Speed Sir!

Mr. Stroup was one of my favorite teachers in high school.  He taught me so much about literature and I will forever be thankful for that.  Heaven has gained a wonderful Angel.  Many prayers to the family.

I loved Mr. Stroup.  In some ways like the Bennetts, the Stroups have always been special to the Sears family.  Lake MI Family Camp week was a highlight of the year for all of us, and I always looked forward to seeing dear Mr. Stroup.  He was so much fun - I can still picture him "hamming" it up to the crazy "Um Ga Wa" song at campfire - and he was my swimming buddy.  When I was a young girl, he and I were "polar bears" - we would swim even when Lake MI was too cold for most anyone else - and he often supervised me when my parents were not interested in going over the dune to the beach. 

Much like Mary Ann Bennett, Mr. Stroup was enthusiastic, encouraging and good-natured toward everyone, and dearly loved his family.  He had a most memorable and wonderful speaking and singing voice, as did Mary Ann, and I can imagine them singing a lovely duet now in Heaven, with Ed Sears and Eva Stroup enjoying every minute of it. Mr. Stroup was a blessing to all, and I thank the Lord for the gift of knowing him as well as the others I mentioned.  My thoughts and prayers go out to John, Bob, and Bill, and their families.

I had the fortunate experience to have Mr. Stroup as a teacher for 3 different classes in 2 different schools. He also sponsored me during 'in service' hours while I was in college. He was a mentor and a friend. To his family, thank you for sharing him with us. I feel I am a better person for having known him. EHS class of 1969.

Mr. Stroup could breathe life into American Lit. One of the reasons I am a good public speaker is because of him. God bless your family.

Mr Stroup - What a great teacher and life mentor you were.  One of my greatest lessons about motivation and achievement I learned from you as your student teacher's helper.  Thanks for pouring into the lives of youth.  Many of us are better people because of you.

I've remembered many of my teachers from junior and senior high, but few have inspired me like Mr. Stroup. If it weren't for his speech class, I would not have become the public speaker I am today.

Mr. Stroup was such a remarkable man. Our families were neighbors when I was born and have been family friends ever since. Growing up with Bob as a best friend meant lots of time spent at the Stroup household. To this day I think of them whenever I eat spaghettios (Bob knows what I mean).
We would be having a game of whiffle ball in the front yard and Mr. Stroup would come out and join in the fun, all the while teaching us life's lessons without us even knowing it at the time.
Mr. Stroup would take us to Everett football and basketball games that he was announcing. He would let us guess the attendance and would announce it on the PA system regardless of how "off" our estimates were because he knew what a big deal it was to us. He would open up the camper and let us camp out in the driveway during the Summers. I would have loved to have been a student of his in the classroom. Both he and Mrs. Stroup were two of the most loving, caring teachers I have ever had the privilege to know and feel blessed that I was a student of life under them during my very early years.  
He made everyone that had the honor of knowing him, feel special. Mr. Stroup made the most of his time on Earth and left lasting impressions in so many people, and a tremendous legacy in his three boys. His life is truly one to celebrate, he has earned the privilege to be called home to the Lord and be reunited with Mrs. Stroup and I'm sure they can't help but smile when they look down and see the amazing family that they built out of love.
Mr. Stroup was like my second father growing up and I will truly miss him.

So sad to hear this news.  I have many wonderful memories of Mr. Stroup from my years at Everett.  May he rest in peace, now with the Angels.

Today, I heard the news and I watched in silence, as the remaining leaves of the surrounding trees, finally let go, to join with the newly fallen snow.  Instantly, and through my reluctance, I was assured that the season had changed. Mr. Stroup, you've been with me, from the moment I walked into your classroom. Mr. Stroup, what a wonderful man!  He was my English teacher at Everett HS in the 70's and I use his words of wisdom about public speaking to this day.  Godspeed to you, Mr. Stroup and my deepest sympathy to your family.

Jim was an amazing English teacher that I had the privilege of working with for a lot of years.  He always had a smile even on a bad day.  He was our poet laureate for the Staff Do-or-Die award, always creating something wonderful to present to our staff members.  
I have a lot of memories of Jim that I have in my brain.  Know that he was someone very special and an access to his profession and to Everett High School.

It's been 44 years since I had my last class with Mr. Stroup, but I've always remembered him.  He was my favorite teacher at Everett.  In fact, his classes were the only ones I ever looked forward to.

Mr Stroup was an exceptional educator and a good and decent man who truly loved to teach as he literally taught generations of families. You will be missed greatly by all those you taught and will be remembered in their lives as the knowledge you passed on continues to live in them.

My heart goes out to the entire Stroup family. I had him for several classes at Everett High School. Some of my favorite memories came from joking around, reminiscing from my mom and siblings having had him as a teacher and never letting him call himself old save for the one week each year between his birthday and my dad's when he was older. Mr. Stroup made an impression on so many of us during his teaching career. His genuine care and concern for his students never went unnoticed. May he rest in peace.

He was a great teacher and seemed to really care about his students. He will be missed.  My thoughts to the family.

I knew Mr. Stroup for many years, from Grace United Methodist Church, from having him as a teacher at Everett High School and when he was a neighbor to my parents in Colonial Village.  He was one of the nicest and most helpful teachers I had.  I remember his voice like it was yesterday.  He will truly be missed.
