John was a true Renaissance man. He was well read, erudite and intellectually astute. A seat at his table was a prized invitation. It offered an evening of wonderful company, exquisite food executed by his own thoughtful hand, with lively conversation accompanied by selections from his wide ranging music collection. He delighted in having the love of his life at his side; Carla, his wife of 29 years. He swept her off her feet with his charm, generosity to others, thoughtfulness and a mutual interest in foreign cinema..... movies at the Odeon were always a must. While courting her, daily love letters were a constant and continued into the marriage with frequent offerings of her favorite orchids.
While not a dashing swordsman, he was an avid tennis player, besting many who were his junior. He was an equally avid bicyclist and loved competing against himself. And just as it gave him a sense of joie de vivre to feed friends so he also fed our feathered neighbors.
His wife brought her love of animals into his life. He fell madly in love with the Papillon she introduced into their marriage. French was his first language and he named the black & white puppy, Mignonne, and she was indeed, his sweetheart. Her ashes will join his.
He was a reference librarian extraordinaire and took both immense pleasure in mentoring students as well as working with his beloved Cooley Law School professors. He was inspirational to many of his colleagues.
He cherished friends and corresponded with lovely letters, no matter the distance. He loved his brothers and weekly conversations were an indelible part of his life.
He was a good neighbor and even after his heart attack, he would be up early on cold snowy days to snow blow his own walk & drive and those of neighbors.
We have lost to the heavens a man who will remain in our hearts and with time, the best of memories will soothe the void that now besets us with grief.
You were my prince, my love.
