Born in Midland, Michigan, John was a man of humor, depth, and perseverance. He had a sharp wit, a wealth of knowledge on countless subjects, and a loyal heart that defined his relationships.
After attending Hillsdale College, he built a long career with the State of Michigan, retiring as a Senior Contract Analyst. Beyond his work, John found joy in the simple rituals of daily life — coffee, the morning paper, and a crossword puzzle. He loved to read, play golf, and spend time on the course, beginning as a teenage caddie at the Midland Country Club, later competing in leagues through work, and teaching the game to his four sons.
John was an avid sports fan, especially when it came to Michigan teams, and he followed them faithfully at every level. He also enjoyed playing pool and cards, and though he often appeared easygoing, he was a no-nonsense man. To be John’s friend was to have a friend for life.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John Ernest and Elizabeth Forney Mitchell; his daughter, Stephanie; and his sister, Shirley Potts. He is survived by his sons, Matt (Sarah and their son Kellen), J (Sarah and their children Emma, Lillian, Nathan, Noah, and Madelyn), Stephen, and Todd.
He will be remembered for his humor, perseverance, and unwavering love of family and friends.
