Grandpa was called home to join his son Antonio "Tony" Ortiz in everlasting happiness on July 10, 2026. Though he will be immensely missed in the flesh we know he is at peace and tinkering in the garage in heaven.
Jose Ortiz Sr. was known for his work ethic, dedicating 40 years of service at MSU, never missing a coffee break at each department he delivered to. He was also a dedicated member of Cristo Rey Church for over 40 years, where he volunteered yearly at the Cristo Rey Fiesta. He was always known for his polite mannerisms and sense of humor, so much that he had us laughing up until a few days before he was called home. He enjoyed hunting, Mexican dancing, and watching wrestling. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Josefina Ortiz; children, Jose Ortiz Jr (Alicia), Maria Velasquez (Cris), and Monica Bishop (Isaac); numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Antonio Ortiz; parents, Juan and Elvira Ortiz; brothers, Antonio and Juan; sisters, Julia, Adelena, Josefina, Maria Dora, and Norma Rosa.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 am Thursday, July 16 at Cristo Rey Catholic Church, with visitation from 9:30 am until the time of Mass. The Rite of Committal will follow at East Lawn Memory Gardens.
While he is no longer with us physically, we find comfort knowing he is in heaven grilling with his son and enjoying their sweet treats.
