Born in Lansing to Oliver Lewis Smith and Flossie Marie (Brendhal) Smith, Joyce graduated from Bath High School in 1954. She went on to work for the United States Postal Service, where she served her community with dedication.
Joyce was a devoted member of Messiah Lutheran Church in Holt, Michigan, where she actively participated in the Altar Guild. Her faith and commitment to her church were central parts of her life.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 56 years, Gay Powers; her parents; her son Shane Powers; and siblings Barbara, Ellen, Carol Mae, Charles, and Jerry. She is survived by her sons Brian Powers and Robin (Judy) Powers; grandchildren Taylor, Alina, Sydney, Orion, and Storm; siblings James Smith and Erma Ash; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Joyce’s greatest joy was being a grandmother. Her love for her grandchildren was a defining part of her life and brought her immense happiness.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 15 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Gorsline-Runciman Funeral Home, 900 E. Michigan Ave., Lansing, MI 48912. A funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m. at Messiah Lutheran Church, 5740 Holt Rd., Holt, MI 48842. The family will receive guests beginning at 10:00 a.m. at the church. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery, with a luncheon to be held afterward at the church.
