

Laura Louise Skillings, 61, of Lansing, Michigan, passed away on September 5, 2024, after a monthlong illness. The youngest of three siblings, Laura was known for her direct yet playful spirit, as well as her kind and generous support of others.
Laura attended Lansing Community College, obtaining a degree in history from Western Michigan University, and a master’s degree in education from Colorado State University.
Laura found her calling as a community college counselor, working with non-traditional students in: Colby, Kansas, Page, Arizona, Fort Collins, Colorado; and, Niles, Michigan. Laura had profound respect and empathy for first-generation students. She guided students with wisdom, practicality, and humor, helping them navigate the challenges of academia and personal strife.
Laura enjoyed University of Michigan football, scrapbooking, reading, beadwork, spending time with friends, and travel with her beloved sister. Her passion also centered on her rescue cats—Kitty, Kit & Kat, and most recently Luna, her constant companion.
Laura will be deeply missed by her sister Carol Skillings and brother-in-law Thomas Stanton, her brother Jerry Skillings, sister-in-law Abby Spector, and niece Anna Skillings, as well as devoted friends and numerous acquaintances. She was predeceased by her parents, Dorothy Rose Matz Skillings and Walter Willard Skillings.
