

She was born on April 5, 1928, in Austinburg, Ohio, to Raymond Francis and Ella Lillian Covell (Williams). Lenora married Russell Stanaway in Lansing, Michigan, on June 27, 1948.
Lenora graduated from Perry High School, Perry Ohio, in 1946. She was a very active student participating in U.S. saving bond drives during WWII, student council, honor society, cheerleading, school plays, numerous clubs and editor of the school paper. Growing up she loved going to sporting events, dances, movies and Lake Erie beaches. She was a dedicated Christian throughout her life. Awarded Prince of Peace while in high school, she later taught Sunday school at West Lansing Church of Christ for several decades. She supported West Lansing Church of Christ, Great Lakes Bible College and Great Lakes Christian Homes. Lenora was a devoted mother. As a Girl Scout leader she took her scouts to the New York World’s Fair. Her hobbies included bowling, swimming, gardening, roller coasters and collecting. She worked at a soda shop counter during high school and post-graduation. When her children were old enough she went to work as a librarian, a department store clerk and finally was employed by the State of Michigan Treasury Department. After retirement, she traveled with friends and family, visited and helped elderly friends, volunteered and made crafts, spent time taking grandchildren to amusement parks, ice cream shops and bowling alleys, as well as attending sporting events throughout Michigan. Lenora will be known for her kindness, caring nature, and generosity.
She is survived by her children, David (Jeannine) Stanaway, Nancy Helmic, and Mary Ann (Russell) Powell; grandchildren Eric Stanaway, Brett (Jillian) Stanaway, Daniel (Margaret) Stanaway, Patrick (Noelle) Helmic, Katherine (Eric) Smith, Lucas Powell; nine great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Lenora was preceded in death by her husband, Russell Stanaway, her parents, Raymond and Ella Covell, brothers, William Capron and Ray Covell, son in law, Craig Helmic.
A visitation for Lenora will be held on Sunday, July 14, 2024 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes Tiffany Chapel, 3232 W Saginaw St., Lansing, MI 48917. A funeral service will take place on Monday, July 15 2024 at 11:00 AM, with a one-hour prior visitation from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, at West Lansing Church of Christ, 5505 W St. Joseph Hwy., Lansing, MI 48917. Following the service, Lenora will be laid to rest in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, 4444 W Grand River Ave., Lansing, MI 48906.
