Randy was born on a cold day on February 19, 1960, in Grand Rapids, Michigan to his loving mother, Charlotte Sterrett. Growing up, Randy had one younger brother, Scott Sterrett. However, he had many cousins close by that always felt like he had many brothers and sisters. And recently in life, he discovered he had a half sister who he briefly connected with.
Randy married the love of his life, Kay, on December 11, 1979. They were young loves at 18 and 19 years old but the first time he gave her a ring (& his heart) was at age 12. Randy and Kay have known each other since they were five years old. The first addition to their family, Michael Lee Sterrett, was born on October 2, 1979. Followed by Brandi Mae Sterrett on May 17, 1984.
Randy spent most of his life in the maintenance field. One of his favorite positions he held was for the local radio stations where he was once awarded “The Most Elusive Award” where he could never be found and was usually somewhere “resting his eyes” as he always used to say.
He had a love of family and spent his life being an active dad with his kids and the best Papa to his three granddaughters. Randy always had a great way with kids and made all little ones feel comfortable and safe around him. He was fun!
In his spare time, he enjoyed watching the Detroit Lions. He was no Fairweather fan though he still “enjoyed” watching them even with their many years of losing. A go-to Christmas of birthday gift usually had to do with the Lions. He loved music. Some of his favorites included Rod Stewart, John Mellancamp, The Dixie Chicks, among many others. He loved a cold Coca-Cola, a glass of Nesquik chocolate milk (spoon-in!), and either a cold Bud Light or rum and Coke.
Randy, Dad, Papa… Will be remembered as a kind-hearted, happy, loving man. He leaves behind to cherish his memory his loving wife of 46 years, Kayann “Kay” Sterrett; loving son, Michael Sterrett (Tia Collins); loving daughter, Brandi Positano; and son-in-law, Joseph Positano. His three beautiful granddaughters: Brianna Alece Positano “Sweet-pea or Bri-Bri” (Riley Reeves), Sommer Mozelle Sterrett "Somshine” (Antwan Davis Jr.), and Ava Celeste Positano “Sugarbutt”. His loving mother, Charlotte Sterrett; and brother, Scott Sterrett. Brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Ken and Frances Gordon; as well as his sister-in-law, Jan Logan. He is also survived by many special cousins, Tonia and Jim Nelson, Barry Nelson, Bob and Terri Nelson, Carol, Hank, and Joe. And his long lost sister, Kathy Black Houghton.
An Irish Blessing ~ May the road rise to meet you. May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face. The rains fall soft upon your fields. And, until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of his hand.
We will gather to celebrate his life on Saturday, November 21, 2026 at 3:00 PM at the Perry City Hall, 203 W Polly St., Perry, MI 48872.
