

A proud Marine who was honored to serve has passed away. Robert "Bob" George Bates, age 75, of Kentwood, Michigan passed away on Monday, December 25, 2023. Bob was born in Lansing, the son of Irwin and Laura Bates. He graduated from Lansing Eastern High School, class of 1966. Following graduation, Bob enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He served as a Sergeant in Vietnam during the Battle of Khe Sanh and was twice awarded the Purple Heart as well as other commendations. Following his military service, he returned to Lansing where he worked as a supervisor at General Motors for over 35 years.
Bob enjoyed model trains, golfing, fishing, and hunting. He enjoyed attending the annual family reunion in Reed City and spending time with his three Australian Shepherds. He was a member of the American Legion Post 12, 40 et 8 Voiture 946, and the Military Order of the Purple Heart. He was a member of the Marine Corps League and the Khe Sanh Veterans and enjoyed attending the annual reunions.
Surviving are his wife, Lynn; children, Jennifer (Chad) Finney, Jason (Tammy) Bates, step-daughter, Carrie (Jude) Pereira; grandchildren, Zachary and Nicholas Finney, Jason Bates, Jr and Sierra (Nathan) Bates-Wils, Avery, Asher, and Quinton Pereira; numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Beverly, Lee, Jerry, Tony, Duane, Ward, and Joe.
Visitation will be held from 2:00-4:00 pm on Sunday, January 7, 2024 at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes Lansing Chapel, 900 E. Michigan Ave. The funeral will be held at 1:00 pm on Monday, January 8 at the funeral home, with visitation one hour prior. A reception to follow the service.
