was born on August 8, 1933 in Detroit, Michigan.
Bob served in the Air Force and was stationed in Libya, Africa for a time. He returned to the States to
attend Michigan State University, where he met his wife-to-be, Ann Copeland. He received his
bachelor’s and master’s degrees from MSU in Special Education and interned at the Michigan School for
the Deaf in Flint. He was one of five people in the nation to win a fellowship to work on his doctorate in
Wichita, Kansas. He and Ann lived there for two years. In 1962, they gave birth to their first daughter,
Laurie. Bob was hired by the Lansing School District, and when the family returned to Michigan,
daughter Robin was born. He eventually became Director of Special Education for the Lansing School
District, a position he held until his retirement.
Bob loved working with Deaf youth and those with special needs. After retiring from the school district,
he worked for Dean Transportation taking special education children to and from school. He also spent a
good deal of time on the golf course, until his knees would no longer allow it. He was very active in
Lansing area bridge games and tournaments, making American Contract Bridge League Life Master in
1987. He was also an ACBL director for the local bridge club. He had a passion for fishing his entire life
and indulged in it whenever possible. He especially enjoyed time spent on Lake Michigan, fishing out of
Spring Lake and Grand Haven. An avid sports fan, he watched nearly any sport on TV. He might criticize
them from time to time, but he remained a loyal fan of the MSU Spartans, Detroit Tigers, Detroit Red
Wings, Detroit Pistons, and the Detroit Lions.
He had a talent for making great smoked salmon, peanut brittle, and Christmas hard candy, and was
always happy to share. Bob was the official dog walker of the family. He enjoyed everyone’s dogs,
especially his own - Muffin, Benji, and Buddy H. He was the self-appointed supervisor for all
neighborhood home and yard projects, and he was diligent about alerting people if they left their garage
door open after dark. He had a smile and a greeting for everyone around him.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ann; daughter, Laurie; and brother, A. Charles. He is survived by his daughter, Robin Weir, as well as three sisters-in-law, several nieces and nephews, and their children.
