

Thelma married her beloved husband, William Schobert, on November 19, 1960 in Hillsdale, Michigan and they raised three children together. Thelma obtained her BA in teaching from Hillsdale College and went on to teach high school in Livonia and Cheboygan over the course of two years until her husband’s frequent military transfers began, moving the family to numerous different cities in several different states including Michigan, Connecticut, Virginia, New Jersey, Louisiana, and Guam of the Mariana Islands. Thelma was also a member of University Baptist Church in East Lansing and a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority during her college years.
Thelma enjoyed arts and crafts, cooking, gardening, and reading with a special interest in New Orleans and Upper Peninsula Michigan history. She loved her family and was extremely supportive and dedicated to her children and grandchildren. She was the primary daycare provider for all five of her grandchildren during their early childhood years and attended all extra-curricular activities of children and grandchildren when she was physically able. Thelma will be remembered as a supportive mother and homemaker during and after her husband’s 20-year military career.
Thelma is survived by her husband of 62 years, William Nolden Schobert; children, Douglas (Donna) Schobert, Eric (Kimberly) Schobert, and Kirsten (Barry) Ford; grandchildren, Melissa, Ronnie, Megan, Cody, and Mackenzie; great-grandchildren, Mila and Isaac; and siblings, Theodore, Glenn, and Randy. She is preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Mable Champion.
A funeral service will take place on Monday, January 2, 2023 at 12:00 pm, with a two-hour prior visitation from 10 am to 12 pm, at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Home Tiffany Chapel, 3232 W Saginaw St., Lansing, MI 48917. The following day, Thelma will be laid to rest in Bankers Cemetery in Hillsdale County at 12:00 pm.
