

GRES, Alfred D, age 87, of Indian Shores died peacefully at home with family April 23, 2011. Born in Philadelphia, PA he moved his young family to the Tampa Bay area in 1947. He began his career in accounting at Florida Portland Cement Co in Tampa, advancing and later becoming Chief Financial Officer at Florida Steel Corp. He served as a paratrooper in the U.S. Army in Europe during WW II. He enjoyed sailing, tennis, skiing and golf. He was involved for years in Rotary Club, Davis Island Yacht Club, was instrumental in the formation of Cub Scouts and Boy Scout Troop 63 based at First Presbyterian Church of Tampa, Big Brothers and Sisters, and the Hospice Foundation. He was a long time member of the First Presbyterian Church of Tampa and Christ Presbyterian Church of Largo. Upon his retirement, Mr. Gres made several medical mission trips each year with his wife Jeanne, to Africa, Haiti, and Honduras. He is survived by his wife, Jeanne Hardin-Gres; sons Wright (Dusty), Stephen, and Jimmy (Pat) Gres, Rory Hardin (Jacquelyn); a daughter Janet Rahal (Joe); 9 grandchildren: Kyle Gres, Elise Ippolito (Ian), Katie Gold (Steve), Justin Gres, Rossy Fisher, Alec Fisher, Zach Fisher, Collin Rahal, Davis Rahal, Jody Osceola, Rory II Hebert, Brandy Hardin, and Tyler Hardin; and great grandchildren: Emma Gres, Cameron Gold, Ben Osceola, Corey Miles, Kaylie Miles, Talance Callins. He is preceded in death by first wife Katherine “Tata” Waller Gres, infant daughter Katherine, and sisters Nancy and Blanche. A Memorial Service is scheduled for Saturday, April 30, 2011 at 11 am at Christ Presbyterian Church, 3115 Dryer Ave in Largo. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Christ Presbyterian Church or to a charity of choice, in Al’s memory.
