Born on November 10, 1939, in Buff Bay, Portland, Jamaica, Aubrey was the son of Agnes Thompson and Ivan Newland. From his earliest days in Jamaica to his years abroad and eventually in the United States, Aubrey carried with him a tireless work ethic and an extraordinary range of talents.
A true master of many trades, Aubrey spent 20 years as an Aviation Maintenance Technician with BWIA Airlines in England — a testament to his skill, discipline, and dedication. After making his home in the United States, he brought that same commitment to every role he took on, working at the historic Suwanee Hotel, Orkin and Terminix Pest Control, and Lakewood Elementary School, where he served as a maintenance custodian.
Ever the entrepreneur, Aubrey eventually built his own pest control business, and it was through this work that he earned the nickname that would stick with him for the rest of his life — "Bug Man." It was a name worn with pride, a reflection of his hard-won independence and the warm regard of all who knew him.
On June 18, 2020, Aubrey married Leonie Thomas, finding love and companionship in his later years.
Aubrey leaves behind his wife Leonie, his daughter Elsa, his brothers Jim, Albert, Windell, and Linton, his sisters Vinette and Joyce, and a wide circle of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends
Aubrey Winston Newland lived fully, worked proudly, and left behind a legacy as enduring as his nickname.
A memorial service will be held for Aubrey on Friday, June 26, 2026 at 5pm at All Nations SDA Church; 4200 34th Street S St. Petersburg, FL 33712
