There was a chill in the air, Friday, November 11, 1938, but two young people in love drove from Union, WV to Greenup, KY to be "hitched." Seventy-five years later on Sat, November 9, Bob and Beryl Fullen Sydnor celebrated the memorable occasion in Largo, FL with family and friends gathered around. That love that began just before WWII had endured and grown stronger with each passing day.
They were young when they married, both just 19 years old. Then the war caught up with them in 1942. Bob was sent to Hawaii and Guam to serve with the Seabees while Beryl remained at home, like most married women their age, and at that time worked at the West Virginia Statehouse. Upon Bob's return from the war, they moved to Montgomery, WV where Bob enrolled in WV Tech to gain a degree in education and Beryl helped support them working as a financial secretary.
In 1949, with a degree in hand and the hope of a bright future and warmer weather, the couple moved to McClenny, FL where Bob began his career as an educator. He then entered the University of Florida in Gainesville to secure his masters degree, while Beryl worked in the Foundation Department. It was during those years that they became avid Gator fans and continue to cheer for the Gators in football and basketball every year. Both of their careers in Largo spanned 28 years, with Bob teaching at Largo High School and Beryl serving as Secretary to the City Manager of Clearwater, FL.
Florida is home to the Sydnors, even though their heart will always be in West Virginia where most of their family remained. They travelled most summers to spend time in the Union and Ansted areas of WV catching up with family and friends, meeting new family members as the family began to grow. Their nieces-nephews and spouses, then great nieces-nephews and spouses, and now great nieces-nephews were shown unconditional love and always received a warm hug and friendly smile each time they were in their presence, along with showing interest in their activities.
To fill their free time, the Sydnors were avid readers, logged many miles on their boat as their Florida boating group ( a group the Sydnors organized and strong friendships continue to to this day) sailed the waterways of Florida, and attended many University of Florida Gator games wearing blue and orange to show their support. Bob enjoyed woodworking while Beryl created on the sewing machine and enjoyed many crafts. Living in Florida, the Sydnors often entertained family and friends from 'up north' always welcoming with open arms, a warm heart and satisfying meal.
On November 9, the Sydnor's 75th wedding anniversary was celebrated by family and friends who travelled from many cities across the country, with a luncheon at Bob Heilman's in Clearwater. On November 11, the actual date of their anniversary and Veteran's Day, the Largo Historical Society, where Bob and Beryl have been members for over 10 years, paid tribute to the veterans, including Bob's service, and Beryl and Bob's 75th anniversary with a dinner, cake, a corsage for Beryl, and a special program.
Then on December 7, 2013, Beryl F. Sydnor passed away. She is survived by the love of her life for over 75 years, Robert J. Sydnor. Beryl was born June 13, 1919 in Union, WV.
