Charlotte was born in Iowa City, IA to Nellie Mae Good and Dr. Welton Knarr. She grew up in Atlantic, Iowa. Charlotte studied music at the University of Iowa and was active with the Alpha Delta Pi sorority. She was chosen Queen of the Mecca Ball by the engineering students. There she sang with Len Carroll’s Orchestra which she enjoyed immensely.
While singing at a sorority event she met E. Allen Bailey. He invited her to church and “she was hooked” as she described it. Charlotte later transferred to Northwestern University to study dental hygiene (her Dad was a dentist), and Allan followed doing more training with the US Navy Air Corps. They married in September, 1945.
Charlotte and Allen moved to Ithaca, NY so that Allan could study engineering at Cornell; their first child was born there. Then they moved to Kansas and Illinois with Allan’s engineering firm; two more children were welcomed to the family. Seeking warmer weather and a chance to start his own construction company, Allan moved the family to Largo in 1954. She helped design and decorate the custom homes Allan built and both became active in the community. Charlotte was a charter member of the Clearwater Jr. Women’s Club and co-president with Allan of the Largo High School P.T.A. They were also very active with Peace Memorial Presbyterian Church where Charlotte was a soloist in the Choir.
After Allan died in 1965 Charlotte returned to college to study data processing. And after the children were grown she began working in a local bank. She then met Alan J Snider, founder of Sun Coast Hospital and a new chapter in her life began. They married in 1972 and she joined Alan in hospital activities becoming Fine Arts chairman of the Sun Coast Hospital Guild and then president first of the Pinellas County Osteopathic Medical Society Auxiliary and then the Florida Auxiliary in 1983.
Charlotte continued her love of music by singing and playing organ and or piano at Anona United Methodist Church in Largo and Bright Hope Laurel United Methodist Church in Mars Hill, North Carolina where the couple met new friends when they chose a mountain home at Wolf Laurel. They had a full life with dear friends in both Florida and North Carolina until they felt the need to simplify their lifestyle and moved to Brookdale Pinecrest in Largo. Alan died in 2014 and Charlotte continued to cherish her children and ever-expanding family, the Anona Church community and her many friends.
Charlotte is survived by her children Randi Bailey of Largo, Brant (Analyn) Bailey of St Petersburg & Sharron (Kenneth) Parker of Wake Forest, NC and stepchildren Dr. Alan H. (Dr. Rebecca) Snider of Tipton, MI, Barbara (Thomas) Graham of Littleton, CO, Gail (Bill) Huch of Burbank, CA and Joan (Pat) Mangas of Franklin, NC along with 13 beloved grandchildren and great grandchildren as well.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at Anona United Methodist Church, 13233 Indian Rocks Road, Largo on Friday, December 14, 2018 at 2pm. Condolences may be offered at www.serenityfuneralhomelargo.com.
