Corene "LaVerne" Southard

On Wednesday, August 5, 2020 Corene LaVerne Southard, loving mother of three, passed away at the age of 87.

LaVerne was born October 12, 1932 in Sardis, Oklahoma to Mark and Ruby Crosswell, both deceased. LaVerne was the oldest of 5 children. She was preceded in death by her two sisters, Loretta Hendricks and Sue Sagar. She is survived by her sister, Gaytha TenEyck and brother, Mitchell Crosswell.

She grew up in Oklahoma and received her associates degree in Business from the McAlester School of Business. She married and had two sons, Keith and Mark, and one daughter, Kay. She raised her children as a single parent providing for them with a career as Deputy County Superintendent of Schools in Pittsburg County, Oklahoma.

LaVerne loved to fly and travel even if it was just around the corner. She did get to have the adventure of a lifetime on a cruise around Alaska and spoke fondly of it frequently. After LaVerne lost her mom in 2005, she relocated to Florida to live near her daughter, Kay. Kay made sure to continue her travels with day trips around the Florida coast.

LaVerne leaves behind a family who will miss her very much. She is survived by her oldest son, Keith Southard and his four children, Joshua, Caleb and Hannah Southard, and Sarah Armstrong and husband Paul, and great grandchildren, William and Cora Armstrong. She is also survived by her son, Mark Southard and his wife Stacey and their children, Phillip Southard and wife Jennifer and Russell Southard, and her daughter and caregiver, Delana Kay Krueger and husband Jerry. Many nieces, nephews, and cousins were a close part of LaVerne’s life and will share in her memory and love.

A memorial service is not being held at this time. A celebration of life is being arranged for the fall of 2021 to be held in McAlester, Oklahoma, details to follow. Photos, videos, or notes may be sent to Thad Brenny Please label them “LaVerne.”

One time when LaVerne was visiting, it was tomato season. The cherry tomatoes were growing abundantly that year. Never before and never since have they grown so well. I think they knew she was going to be visiting because she did not let any of those little tomatoes go to waste. She taught me that they can be eaten like grapes as she went to town on the bowl in front of her.
