David Lowell Cullum, 72, of Largo, Florida, passed away on November 19, 2024. Born on May 31st in Pontiac, Michigan, to Lowrene Eunola Penrod and Russell Lowell Cullum, David lived his life loving his family well, and serving others with a glad and generous heart. A graduate of Seminole High School, he completed a semester of college at Spring Arbor College in Michigan before serving in the U.S. Army as a Morse code intercept operator in Vietnam and Thailand.
On December 26, 1975, David married Sandra Louise Temple, with whom he shared hard work, laughter (jokes, puns and good-natured teasing) and much forgiveness. David poured his heart into his work and his family. Professionally, he followed in the footsteps of his father, becoming a journeyman electrician then taking the helm of Florida Electrical Service as earning his electrical contractor license. He was the guiding force behind the wiring of countless churches, schools, businesses, and industrial buildings in the Tampa Bay area, leaving a legacy of craftsmanship, integrity and fairness that impacted many in the industry.
David’s passion for life extended beyond his professional accomplishments. He loved baseball and spent many hours as a player, then a coach, sharing his knowledge and experience with young athletes, some of whom still call him "Coach Grandpa." Music gave him much joy, whether singing in the choir, playing trombone in the orchestra at First Baptist Church of Indian Rocks, or making up his own words to almost any song. An avid aviator, David owned and flew several different single-engine planes over the years, and in his retirement, he learned many new skills as he built a RANS-S21 experimental plane.
David is survived by his wife of many years , Sandra Cullum; his children, Kyle David Cullum (Michelle) and Samuel Levi Cullum (Amber); his grandchildren, Prema, Isaac, Eli, Bennett, Kyrie, Zoe, and Levi; and his siblings, Douglas Cullum, Denise Cullum-Masciarelli, Dudley Cullum, and Debbi Nolan. His welcoming smile and his example of love, integrity, generosity and service will stay with those who knew him well - those whose life he has impacted for the better.
A Memorial Service will be held for David on Friday, January 3rd, 2025 at 2:00pm at Faith Community Church; 11501 Walker Avenue, Seminole, FL 33772. Please wear the colors that you like and casual clothes that are comfortable to you. Work clothes and uniforms are perfectly fine. David himself often wore fishing shirts with paint stains to church and disliked wearing suits and ties.
David always liked to pay it forward. If you’d like to honor his memory, please make a donation to Metropolitan Ministries, Salvation Army, charity of your choice or give to someone who needs encouragement or a helping hand.
