My first memory of my dear cousin was when I was 5 and I studied her reading a comic book without having to "read outloud", I wanted to impress her so badly that I faked reading and only turned my pages when she did. She never noticed. A few years later she, Tamara and I went to the theatre to watch Tammy Tell Me True. Debbie was so grown up and pretty. We were just in awe of her. In 1968 ? She came out to Calif and roomed with me for a week or so. I always loved her laughter and smile. She was beautiful and brilliant. I loved her, and will remember her always.

Debbie was a good friend, a loving sister-in-law, and someone who retained her inner beauty. One of my most treasured memories of Debbie is when I was in labor before I gave birth to my first child, Tamara. The nurses thought I might be in false labor, so they sent me to the lobby of Bayfront Hospital because I lived too far from the hospital in case they were wrong. I was with Steve, his mom and dad and Debbie in that lobby. If I had been in the hospital room, they would not have been allowed in. Steve decided to go to sleep since it was late evening, and he thought my labor might last all night, and Debbie was there to be my coach. I was in terrible pain. And since the nurse said this could be false labor, I felt on the verge of panicthinking about how much worse it would get. Deb had just given birth to my nephew, Matthew, 2-1/2 months before, so she was empathetic and a qualified coach. We walked and walked around the lobby for the next hour between contractions. I would lie down on the couch when the pain came, and she applied some pressure to my back because I was having back labor. She spoke encourging words to me and helped calm me. She was gentle, loving, and more supportive than anyone had ever been to me in my life up to that point. I thought even as I was going through that, "What would I be doing if Debbie wasn't here right now?" The nurses called me back to be examined, and I was 10 cm dialated and the baby was ready to be born. Because I was having back labor, they had been fooled into believing that my labor was not far along. I will always be grateful to Debbie for her kindness that evening and for the blessing of knowing her.

I remember my cousin Debbie with a smile and gentle, tender spirit.  I've prayed for her and her family throughout her illness and even more so now that's she's gone on to heaven.  Bless you Debbie, rest in peace.

"We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord."  2 Corinthians 5:8

Oh, Debbie, kind, generous, loving, funny, you were all those things.  I am so grateful to know that you are YOU again with joy in your heart and no fear.  Rest in peace, dear woman, hero to me in my teenage years.

Debbbie was one of the most beautiful girls I ever knew, even if she was my niece.  All through her youth, until the dreaded disease that robbed her of her vibrant personality took control of her life, she was a joy and fun to be around.  We know that she is at home with the Father and has finally been healed of this disease.  Our prayers are very much with you.
