Don was born on October 6, 1956, in Hollywood, Florida, to Richard and Jean Short. He graduated from Nova High School in Davie, FL, and went on to earn a Master’s degree from Louisiana Tech University. Don dedicated his career to the field of Environmental Science, where he combined his professional life with his deep respect and love for the natural world.
An avid outdoorsman, Don had a lifelong passion for nature, wildlife, fishing, camping, boating, and spending time in the great outdoors. His calm spirit, sense of adventure, and appreciation for life’s simple pleasures will be remembered by all who knew him.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Jean Short. He is survived by his daughter, Dawn Smith (Jason); his grandchildren, London and Finnley; and his brothers, Richard Short (Marla) and John Short (Barbara).
A Celebration of Life will be held by the family on Sunday February 15th, 2026, at Serenity Funeral Home, with a visitation from 9:30-10am and a service starting at 10:00am.
