Our dear mother, Dora Kallas sadly passed away on May 14, 2024, at the age of eighty. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and wife. Dora sacrificed all for her children and grandchildren. She left two successful businesses in New Jersey behind because a doctor told her that her child’s health would be better in a warmer climate. She worked six days a week till the age of 80.
Dora was born in Kalamata, Greece during World War II and the occupation of Greece. After the war had ended, a civil war took place in Greece. The poverty and famine that plagued Greece at that time, had forced her to leave school to find a job to help put food on the table. Dora’s entrepreneurial spirit and quiet wisdom has been the foundation of her success. At the young age of 12, she left home to go to Northern Greece to train to become a hairdresser. She opened her first hair salon in Greece at the age of 15! Later at the age of 18, she opened a cosmetology school in Athens, Greece. At 21 years old, she left Greece and came to America to marry her husband George Kallas. She opened and ran at least six more successful hair salons in New Jersey and then in Florida where she lived for the last 38 years. Her last hair salon, Dora’s Hair Styling, right on Clearwater Beach is a place that everyone visiting knows to stop in to see Dora and get a haircut or some beach braids.
Dora was predeceased by her beloved husband, George Kallas, and survived by her two sons John and Chris Kallas. Dora leaves six grandchildren, Dora, Antonia, Theadora, Zoe, Maia, and Christian and one great granddaughter, Alora.
