Douglas Hilding Olson

Doug was born on July 30, 1936 at Waterbury Hospital in Waterbury, Connecticut, to Dorothy and Hilding Olson. He was raised in nearby Naugatuck, where he graduated from Naugatuck High School before earning his degree from the University of Connecticut in 1959. Throughout his banking career, he continued his education by completing advanced banking courses at Brown University.

Doug dedicated his professional life to community banking. He began his career at Mechanics Savings Bank before joining Essex Savings Bank, where he spent 28 years. Through hard work, integrity, and thoughtful leadership, he rose to become President and chairman before retiring.

A devoted public servant, Doug was deeply involved in the Old Saybrook community. He served on numerous local boards and organizations, coached Little League, and proudly served as Police Commissioner. He was also a faithful member of the Old Saybrook Congregational Church, where his commitment to his community and neighbors reflected the values by which he lived.

Doug and his beloved wife, Patricia, shared 67 wonderful years of marriage, building a life centered on love, family, and unwavering devotion. Together they raised their family in Old Saybrook, Connecticut, before retiring to Naples, Florida.

Family was the greatest joy of Doug's life. He was a loving husband, a devoted father, and a proud grandfather and great-grandfather who demonstrated his unconditional love every day through his kindness, generosity, encouragement, and steady presence. His greatest happiness came from spending time with those he loved.

Doug had many passions outside of work. He was an avid golfer and a longtime member of Clinton Country Club. He and Patricia enjoyed traveling together and creating lasting memories along the way. A lifelong sports fan, he faithfully cheered for the New York Yankees and New York Giants, and he never missed the opportunity to support the UConn Huskies women's basketball team.

Those who knew Doug will remember his quick wit, dry sense of humor, and legendary practical jokes. He had a remarkable ability to make people laugh, often with just a perfectly timed comment or playful prank. His warmth, humility, and sense of fun left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

Doug was preceded in death by his parents, Dorothy and Hilding Olson, and his brother, Robert Olson.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Patricia Olson; his children, Rick Olson (Gillian) and Jenifer Olson McHenry; his five grandchildren, Douglas (Emily), Jeffrey (Christiana), Stefan (Shelby), Fritz, and Patrick; his two great-granddaughters, Daisy and Lily; as well as several cherished nephews and many dear friends.

Doug's family will miss him beyond words and will forever treasure the love, laughter, wisdom, and countless memories he gave them.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, a charity that was close to Doug's heart.
