In loving memory of Eleanor Starina Dickey, the daughter of Mary and Joseph Starina. She was born in Cleveland, Ohio on January 12, 1923. She grew up in Euclid, Ohio with her three sisters and her brother, and enjoyed playing tennis, and taking flying lessons.
In 1944, Eleanor joined the Women's Marines and served for two years until discharged with the rank of Corporal, in June of 1946 in El Toro, California. Still wanting to serve her country, Eleanor joined the United States Occupation Forces in Japan. There, she met and married Sargent Homer PM Dickey from Texas.
After Homer's discharge from the Army, they went back to Cleveland where she gave birth to her son, Paul. When Homer couldn't find a decent job in Cleveland, they left for Phoenix where jobs were plentiful, and their daughter Sharon was born. When a career opportunity with the Defense Department arose for Homer in California, they packed up their two kids and left for California, where they lived for four years. During that time they had their third child, a daughter, Patricia. Homer was transferred many places while with the Government until his retirement in Florissant, Missouri. After Eleanor's retirement from Sears in 1983, the couple moved to Largo, Florida where they would spend their remaining years.
Eleanor is preceded in death by her husband, Homer; daughter, Sharon; and grandson, Scott. She leaves behind her sister, Florence; her son, Paul and his wife Cathy; along with her daughter, Patricia Hall and her husband Michael. She also leaves behind eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; as wells as her neices and nephews.
She was a wonderful woman, strong, beautiful and very thoughtful. She was the most loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and she will be truly missed. Rest in peace, dear Eleanor.
A visitation will take place on Monday, October 15, 2018 from 11am-12pm, with the funeral service at 12pm at Serenity Funeral Home. The burial will follow with military honors at Serenity Gardens Memorial Park.
