Kevin is survived by his beloved wife, Nancy, whom he married in 1966; his daughters, Angela and Diana; his son-in-law, Jamie Haldin; his grandchildren, Avery, Reese, and Grant; his brother-in-law, John Trottnow; his sister-in-law and her husband, Lorie and Larry Whitney; their daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Michael LaRoche, and their son Bryce.
Kevin’s parents emigrated from Ireland in the 1920’s and settled in Brooklyn, New York. Growing up as the youngest of four brothers, Kevin proved to be a strong student, attending St. Michael’s High School on an academic scholarship. He was a gifted and competitive athlete as well, whose talent and determination led him to excel in basketball, football, and baseball. As a teenager, Kevin was recruited by the Brooklyn Dodgers. Ever practical and frugal, he remarked that it did not pay, choosing military service instead.
Kevin proudly served in the United States Marine Corps, where he combined discipline, athleticism, and music. During his service, he played basketball and was a member of the Drum and Bugle Corps. His talent on the court continued beyond his military service and earned him a basketball scholarship to Jacksonville University, where he played on the Men’s Division I team from 1962-1966. Kevin had the good fortune to meet his wife Nancy, while at Jacksonville University.
He later went on to earn a Master of Business Administration from the University of South Florida. Kevin built a long and respected career in banking, holding senior roles with Florida Federal Savings and Loan and NCNB (now Bank of America). He was at the forefront of Florida’s shift to branch banking in the 1970s and 1980s, leading teams focused on real estate acquisition and branch strategy throughout the state. Kevin was known for bringing passion, energy, and intense focus to his work. In order to ensure that he could cover the full state and get where he needed to be, Kevin took it upon himself to get his private pilot license. Kevin flew all over the state of Florida for business and occasionally used his plane for personal travel, going to places like the Bahamas and New Orleans with family and close friends.
Despite a demanding career, Kevin never missed his daughters’ piano recitals or swim meets. He was a strong and steadfast presence throughout their lives. Kevin was endlessly supportive of all of their efforts, particularly academic. He was so proud of their achievements, with both girls attending Ivy League universities and continuing on to build successful careers in their chosen professions. Kevin also instilled in both of his daughters a love of tennis, running and reading, lifelong hobbies that were near and dear to his heart.
As a grandfather, Kevin embraced a lighter, more playful role. He delighted in teasing his three grandchildren, often balling up and throwing whatever paper product was nearby and laughing alongside them. He also loved singing his favorite songs to them. These moments reflected his warmth, humor, and deep affection for his family.
Kevin was actively involved in his church community. He could often be found serving as an usher, greeting others, or simply engaging in conversation and making people feel welcome. He regularly volunteered to help at all church activities, willing to do whatever was needed and often directing others with his characteristic confidence. Kevin frequently said that Sunday was his favorite day, and his family believes this was not only because of church, but also because it allowed him to listen to the beautiful music created and performed by his lifetime love, Nancy.
Nancy and Kevin had just recently celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary. They shared a deep love that stood the test of time, and they were the best of friends who spent almost all of their days together since retirement.
Kevin will be fondly remembered for his outgoing personality, his good-natured sense of humor, his deep dedication to faith, family, and friends, his loyalty and generosity of spirit, his unwavering presence, and the many quiet ways in which he showed his love to those around him. His legacy will be one of light, love, and laughter.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, January 18, at 2:00 p.m. at Oakhurst United Methodist Church in Seminole, Florida. A reception will follow at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Oakhurst United Methodist Church Music Department or to the SPCA, in honor of Kevin’s life.
