I met Kevin in the Fall of 2008. He had just moved to the city & we were working a gig together. After a night filled with plenty of libations, deep conversations & personal debauchery, we became friends. We sought out a piano whilst bar hopping on the Upper East Side so that he could showcase his talent for me--I was amazed. From then on, it became a thing for us, that he would play the piano & I would sing. I had many, many great moments with Kev like that. And I will forever think of him whenever I hear a song that moves me that I know he would love as well.

I would describe my time with Kevin as the most spirited and profound. We were close, connected.  In college, we took many classes together not entirely so I would make him accountable for his attendance, but an excuse to have all night study sessions in our P.J.’s.   Our focus never seemed to stay on task but included many study breaks - involving music to stimulate our minds, dancing to keep us awake, and somehow always veering off with a dissection of our current love interests based on its cosmic and astronomical fate.  Sometimes Kevin would make it to class and other times he wouldn’t, but when he did, we walked together.  After college we became roommates.  It wasn't for a long duration of time but roles which we had plotted from the beginning.  My Will.  His Grace.

I loved that he would stop in mid-sentence to admire a beautiful tree.  When inspiration hit, break into the music room on FSU campus so I could hear a song he was working on, in the proper auditorium setting.  At night, always found time to acknowledge at the shining stars, even after a long night out at Brothers.   

It is so easy for us to fixate on how a story ends but go back to the beginning and marvel at its beauty.  Today and every day, we should stop and revel in the wonder of Kevin P. Harloff.  He would encourage us connect with a song that moves us and play it on repeat for as long as you want.  To admire the beauty in the world, beauty in those that love you, and beauty within yourself.  Let it all shine in when it comes to you and simply recognize the love that exists among us, in all forms imaginable.   

Kev, you will live in my heart forever.
