Loretta Jean (Letavish) Gorog, 71, currently of Largo, Florida, passed away peacefully on Tuesday February 18th, after an 8 year long battle with cancer. Her passing absolutely surprised many who knew her - she kept her long illness a private matter - only sharing with immediate family and very close friends. That was Loretta's way.
Loretta was born in Astoria, NY to the late Frank and Mary Letavish. She was predeceased by her brother Ronnie and his wife Donna, who were the parents of her surviving nieces, Stacey and Meghan , both of NY.
She grew up in NY, married Bob Gorog, and raised their family there until moving to Largo in 1988. After living in Largo for only a year her husband's job took them to Singapore for almost 10 years. There in Singapore as well as in their extensive travels to many countries in SE Asia, the Pacific Rim, and Europe, they made many lifelong friendships. Loretta absolutely loved this traveling "part of the job assignment". People she met and who got to know her became very good friends, and loved her for what she was.
Loretta greatly enjoyed family and friends, cooking (along with a wee bit of wine), playing tennis, entertaining, an occasional game of poker (she was pretty good at it), and of course, traveling, traveling, and more traveling. She was also an avid bridge player - she left a library of bridge books - she was always trying to improve her game.
She is survived by her loving husband Bob, their son Bob Jr and his wife Susan (residing in Medfield, Massachusetts), their daughter Stephanie and her husband Ray (residing in Massapequa, NY), and their five grandchildren - Nicholas, Allison, Anthony, Matthew, and Marissa (all of whom will miss Grandma / Grammy an awful lot), and her two nieces Stacey and Meghan.
Those who knew her found her always to be polite (except when she took their poker money), optimistic, thoughtful, caring, and giving. When traveling the world extensively with her husband she truly appreciated and savored the opportunity of new adventures and friends. She had 71 years total time, with few tears in her life except for her illness, and said she would not have wanted to change anything, except being able to live longer in order to see her grandchildren grow to adulthood and have children of their own someday.
She was cremated in Florida on February 25th, and her remains will be interned in a family plot in NY on March 1st after a Memorial Mass there. There will be another Memorial Mass held for her in St. Jerome's Church in Largo at date to be announced.
Without question she will be deeply missed and remembered by all those whose lives she touched. She left this world much too soon.
In lieu of flowers please consider making a donation to the Hope Lodge at 132 West 32nd Street NY,NY 10001. Loretta received wonderful care from them during her illness.
