December 26, 1941 – November 20, 2020
Maria Suastegui became absent from her body and present with her Lord on November 20, 2020. She is survived by her husband, Eduardo, her brother Julio, her sons Eduardo and Isaac, her grandchildren, Sarah and Daniel, and her daughters-in-law, Patricia and Michelle. She blessed all their lives with her selfless love, generosity, and sacrificial work.
Maria was born in Santa Clara, Cuba, on December 26, 1941. She came to her Lord and Savior at age nine and was baptized at age twelve, launching a life of strong faith, deep conviction, and persistent trust in God. Maria met Eduardo at a Christian camp. Eduardo courted her for five years and they married in 1964. Her first son, Eduardo, would come into the world two years later, and her second son would be born nine years thereafter. Through this season, Maria and Eduardo struggled to make a living under an oppressive Communist government that, discriminating against them for their Christian faith, took away their professions. Maria, a primary school teacher, became a home-based seamstress to support her family. But the Cuban government could not take her teaching heart away. She continued to use her God-given talent and skill in church, where she loved children as a Sunday School teacher. Alongside her husband, Maria raised two boys, Eduardo and Isaac, into whom she poured her legacy of faith. Coming to the United States in 1980, she retrained herself and obtained employment in the Los Angeles School District as an administrative assistant at one of the area’s high schools. Her grandchildren, Sarah and Daniel, brought her great joy and yet one more avenue for her outpouring of selfless love.
All who mourn Maria’s passing will miss her sweet and generous spirit, but we rest assured that our loss is heaven’s gain, where she, at last, has heard her Lord’s words, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
