March 23, 1930 – April 8, 2019
Mary Lou Fleming, 89, of Largo, Florida passed away peacefully with her family by her side, loving her and praying beside her, on Monday, April 8, 2019 after a lengthy illness.
She was born on March 23, 1930 in Saginaw, Michigan to the late Earl and Bertella Phillips. She attended St. Mary’s Catholic school and accepted Christ at an early age. On July 16, 1955, Mary Lou married James Fleming, to whom she was married to for 64 years before her passing. To this union, 3 children were born. Mary Lou loved to travel and she and Jim went on many wonderful vacations together. She loved to go shelling, with Sanibel Island being one of her favorite destinations. Mary Lou also loved to look for sea glass at Patrick’s Air Force beach. She loved to help other people by donating her time to various organizations and spent 20 years as a volunteer at St. Mary’s Hospital in Saginaw, Michigan. Shopping was one of her favorite past times, and she always had a reason to go to the mall or market.
She will forever be remembered by her family and friends for being a kind, loving and devoted mother and wife.
Mary Lou is survived by her caring and loving husband, Jim Fleming, who stood by her side throughout her illness. Jim never missed a day to go visit her and spend time with her, and he was one of the only few she knew instinctively; her sisters, Jerry Robertshaw, Judy Gerthardt and Bertella Petiprin; her son, Mark Fleming and his wife Kathy of Saginaw, Michigan; her daughter, Jami Fleming Kidd of Sycamore, Illinois; her son, Mike Fleming and his partner Salma of Arlington, Virginia; her grandchildren, Brittney, Caelyn, Alissa, Parker, Brant, Shaina, Spencer and Nathan; and her great-grandchildren, Teyaira, Peyton, Aniya, Silas, Blaise, Mikah, Elaya, and Dakota. I remember when I was in Florida with you and I got hurt and you stayed with me and talked about Egyptian stuff, especially King Tut. I think you are the reason I love learning about new things , you instilled your love of learning in me. I will miss you and I hope to see you someday in the future.

You were the kindest soul I ever met. I’m so grateful for all the memories we have with you growing up and that I was able to call you my grandma. I will always remember painting rocks in Saginaw by the pool. You turned the simplest thing into hours of fun. I will never forget riding in your convertible to go shopping. You always loved shopping, and you definitely instilled that in your daughter who instilled it in all of us. I always appreciated your love for seashells and sea glass. I think you passed that down to your great-granddaughter who spent hours walking the beach last time we were in Florida. I’m so glad we were able to see you not long ago and I was able to hug you one last time and tell you I loved you. Ultimately, I’m thankful for your unconditional love and kind spirit that I was not only able to experience from you but also from my mother who you raised to emulate your spirit. I can only hope to live up to your kind spirit. You touch everyone who entered your life and you will be truly missed. Rest In Peace, until we meet again. - Caelyn

Mom. You were the best mother ever. I was so blessed that God gave me you as my mother. I remember all the fun times we had together over all these years. It was so hard for me these last few years to see you suffering. Now I know you are at peace in paradise with your beautiful grand daughter Lauren and your baby girl Diane you never had the chance to meet. One day I will see you again. Until then I will remember you whenever I see a seashell, sea glass, cardinals, butterflies and birdhouses. Fly high beautiful soul!!! Love you forever❤️❤️❤️
