Dr. Melvin Howard Cohen was born on March 18, 1940, in Cleveland, Ohio as a first-generation American, to his parents Irving & Rose Cohen. Mel was always a hardworking young man that excelled in every task. Whether it was helping his father in the kosher butcher shop, driving a delivery route, or learning the skills of an electrician, he always mastered his trade. Most importantly, Mel made the time to create strong friendships that he maintained his entire life.
Mel graduated from The Ohio State University undergraduate program in 1962 and continued his studies at Case Western Reserve Dental School. In 1966, Melvin proudly married Janice Applebaum, also from Cleveland, Ohio. Together they moved to Florida. After his military service he established his dental practice that would later become a TMJ Medical Specialty Practice.
Their family grew to include three children and two grandchildren: Marni (Dave) Keimig, Juli (Jonathan) Silver, Matthew Cohen, Maxwell Silver and Leon Silver.
Mel Served as a Lt. Commander with the United States Coast Guard stationed in St. Petersburg, Florida. During this time, he treated service members and their families on and off station.
Mel was an avid top seeded racquetball player for decades. He found much joy in the game of golf and was very proud to have carded 3 holes in one. Mel was a man of few words, and no one had a bigger heart or loved his family and friends more dearly. If you were in his circle, you were there forever. He is so loved, and his absence will be deeply felt.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Temple B'nai Israel in memory of Dr. Cohen.
