

The beloved son of Philip and Theresa Schaffner. Michael grew up in Lake Ronkonkoma Long Island before moving at a young age to Florida, including the Lutz and Zephyrhills areas.Michael was the cherished baby brother of, and is survived by his three sisters, Mary Ann Schaffner, Patricia (Bill) Lynch and Kathy (Jack) Viana as well as several nieces and nephews.
As a young boy, Michael had a love of nature and of the outdoors, which would continue his entire life. He was curious about the world around him and was often eager to explore it. Michael enjoyed the out of doors and loved all animals, large and small. His childhood interest in dirt biking and his enjoyment of motorcycles continued to adulthood, owning several over the years.
Michael earned a Bachelor of Arts from Saint Leo College in 1996 followed by a Masters in Business Administration from Saint Leo College in 1999.
Michael's long and varied career in public service began as an ambulance driver in St Petersburg Fl, before moving on to Pasco Co. as a firefighter EMT. After putting himself through the police academy he was hired as a Police Officer, first in Clearwater, Florida then Anchorage, Alaska. Later changing careers he worked at Eli Lilly Co, and Tap Pharmaceuticals as a pharmaceutical rep covering the states of Montana, Wyoming and Alaska.
Michael's favorite relaxation came from traveling and cruising the globe. In his travels he was accompanied by his cherished girlfriend Lynn Davis or his dear friend Toni Vineyard. His life goal was to visit all 7 continents by age 50, which he did by age 52. He enjoyed seeing historical sites such as the Great Wall of China, and Machu Pichu Peru, as well as enjoying natures masterpieces like the Great Barrier Reef in Australia and experiencing Antarctica. It was due to the enjoyment of his first cruise to Alaska that later led Michael to relocate there.
Michael was a lover of all animals, but cherished his pets, beginning with his childhood dog Artemis.One of his favorites was Max the Cockatoo (AKA Mr Too). They were best friends for 30 years and counting. Mike also bonded with his friend Steve's dog, Head, during his time in Alaska.
Michael retired in 2003, leaving Alaska and returning to Florida. In retirement, he found new pleasure helping friends and family with many home improvement projects and increased his world traveling.
Simply stated, Michael was a good and kind person, an individual who will for all time be remembered by his family and friends as being a caring and giving person, someone who was a vital part of their lives. Michael leaves behind him a legacy of life-long friendships and many cherished memories.
He was a loved one, a friend, and someone special. To family and friends who knew him best, Michael will be remembered as a very exceptional person.
In Lieu of flowers, his family requests donations be made in his name to the Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary, Big Cat Rescue or the Humane Society.
