Norma Gladys Rooney, 87, died on Saturday, June 28, 2014 at Tierra Pines Nursing Home, Largo, Fl. Norma was born on October 7, 1926 in a suburb of Chicago, Ill. Norma devoted her life to the education of others. During her career as a teacher and dean of college, she worked at Thornton High School, Thornton Community College, and Perdue University. She earned her bachelors and masters degree at DePaul University, Chicago, IL and her doctorate at Loyola University, Chicago, IL.
Norma was a devout Catholic and a member of St. Jerome’s Parish, Largo, FL. She showed her devotion by volunteering and participating in parish programs such as being a long time member of the Mary Martha guild, the Eucharistic Ministry program, and the Bethlehem Center. She also assisted with the RCI program for those joining or rejoining the Catholic Church and was instrumental in writing and securing grants for St. Jeromes. In recognition of her work and devotion she was honored by Bishop Robert Lynch to be a recipient the St Judes Apostle Award. Norma is pre-deceased by her parents, John Rooney and Marie (Smith) Rooney of Homewood, IL, and her brothers, John and Eugene Rooney, both of Largo, FL. She is survived by 3 nieces; Leslie Rooney of Largo, Patricia Scarvelli of Seminole, Amy Pillar of Pinellas Park, and one nephew, Douglas Rooney of Jennings, FL, in addition to several great nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her much loved dog, Fellow.
Services will be held Saturday 7/5/14 at St Jerome’s Church, Largo, FL. Visitation will take place 10:00AM followed by a 11:00 Mass to celebrate her life. A private burial for family will follow. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association (alz.org), SPCA of Pinellas or Humane Society of Tampa Bay.
