Born in Ashtabula, Ohio, she attended Andrews School for Girls (Ohio) where is majored in cooking and baking. In 1943 she joined the United States Coast Guard and served as Ship’s Cook Third Class Women’s Reserve in New Smyrna Beach, Florida.
Phyllis loved animals and was very fond of her furry grand-dogs Otis and Gypsy for whom she dog-sat frequently. She cared for her cockatiel, Corky for over 20 years and he now resides at the Avian and Animal Hospital on Starkey Road.
She lived a full and active life prior to her battle with cancer. Those who knew and loved this sweet lady will remember her grand sense of humor and her quick wit.
Phyllis always wanted to ride in a hot air balloon and on August 14th her wish was granted! The Grant A Dream Foundation (VA Hospice), American Balloons and Bay Pines Veteran’s Hospital (Hospice) granted her final wish with a beautiful sunrise lift-off. While flying high above the ground Phyllis witnessed a rocket launch from Cape Kennedy. The pilot also lowered the balloon touching the surface of a lake which added to the thrill.
Phyllis is survived by her daughter Denise Maloney (Joseph); her son Lawrence (Joyce); 7 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren and one niece.
