Anne Martino, 92, was a Daughter, Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother. She was born on May 17, 1927 in New York, New York to Rose and Gerald Siblano, one of eight children…three sisters and four brothers.
Anne was born during our country’s great depression. Her early childhood years were difficult for the Siblano family, but they endured, stayed strong, united and loving.
Anne (Mom) attended Our Lady of Sorrows School in the lower east side of New York City. Her early childhood and adolescent years were challenging, and at age 16 her Mother Rose passed away. She left school to care and attend to her siblings and father and had been a caregiver ever since.
The following years were most memorable and special to us. The three amigos, Mom, Angela and myself loved, laughed, sometimes quarreled but always endured, grew stronger together and cared for each other. Mom never faltered, quit or weakened. She worked several jobs to raise us and never tired. Mom being one of eight children had us surrounded by so many aunts, uncles and cousins making life a bit easier, a truly remarkable, special and perfect family.
By 1970, Mom married Carlo, aka “Pop”. Her life softened, was lifted and renewed. They began to travel and vacation throughout the US and Europe. By 1975, after the birth of three grandsons her name unofficially changed from Mom to ‘Gram’. The title Gram survived nearly five decades till her passing and then beyond.
In 1990, Gram relocated to Las Vegas and for the next thirty years her passions were cooking, caring and her grandchildren. This time brought her the most happiness and joy. She was relieved, spirited and forever giving.
Throughout her time in Las Vegas she worked as a purveyor of Native American gemstones and artwork, but always family first. Her love for entertaining and cooking was everlasting.
Gram’s last 10 years were alone but surrounded by family. Pop had passed away in 2010; her son-in-law Jim in 2011; and shortly after her daughter Angela in 2015. Through all the hurt, silent tears and sorrow she always displayed strength and fortitude as the family matriarch.
Gram joined those who have gone before on July 25, 2019. She is at peace, free of burdens, and comforted knowing her job was well done. She will be loved, adored and missed.
This is not the end of a story because there was so much more to her. We will always remember her stories; share her wisdom and encouragement, which is part of her legacy…a great legacy that will continue forever.
Gram is survived by her brother, son, four grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
