

Barry Perlmutter, 72, died Monday, February 13, 2017 at Nathan Adelson Hospice following a brief illness. A private ash scattering will be held at a later date. Barry was born on January 7, 1945 in New York, New York. He grew up in Brooklyn, New York. He was the only child of Jessie and Leon Perlmutter. Barry graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School in 1962. He obtained a B.S. in Geology from Brooklyn College in 1966. In 1968 he received an M.A. in Geology from Indiana University and he received his Ph.D. in Geology from The University of Iowa in 1971. Barry was a Professor of Geology for 30 years at New Jersey City University in Jersey City, New Jersey. After his retirement in 2002 he resumed his teaching career at the College of Southern Nevada in 2003 where he taught Environmental Science until June of 2015. He was a volunteer at the Museum of Natural History in Los Angeles and the Nevada State Museum, working on Geology related projects. Barry loved teaching and sharing his knowledge of geology and science with students. He spent many of his holidays going to geologic sites in the U.S. and overseas. He was an avid sports fan loving Hockey, Football and Tennis. He is survived by his wife Rebecca. Barry was a kind and gentle man who will be missed by those who knew and loved him.
