We are saddened to announce the death of Bernard David Pachter (Dov Berel ben Moshe Yankel v’Perel, z”l). Bernie died at home on December 31, 2021 (27 Tevet 5782), two weeks after his 94th birthday. Bernie is survived by his beloved wife Martha. Bernie and Martha used to tease that they’d been married for 14 wonderful years “which ain’t bad out of 72.” In fact, Bernie and Martha doted on each other for all 72 years.
In addition to Martha, Bernie is survived by his brother Sidney (Sylvia) Pachter of Tamarac, Florida. Bernie is also survived by his son Richard (Terry) of Sacramento, California, his daughter Laura Rezk of Asheville, North Carolina, and his son Josh (Laurie) of Midlothian, Virginia. Bernie is also survived by his five grandchildren: Aly and Jacob Pachter, Alia Rezk, Becca Jones, and Sam Rezk.
Bernie was predeceased by his parents Morris (z”l) and Pearl (z”l) and his sister Florence Schulkin (z”l) and his brother (in-law) Ben Schulkin (z”l).
Bernie and Martha move to Henderson, Nevada in December 2005. He was an active member of Midbar Kodesh Temple.
Bernie was born in 1927 in Allentown, Pennsylvania. His father Morris died in November 1933. Bernie joined the Coast Guard in the waning days of World War II and served as a medic in Guam, Iwo Jima, and Ulithi, earning the rank of Hospital Corpsman 2d Class. One of the great joys of his later years was participating in an Honor Flight to Washington D.C. in November 2019.
Shortly after returning from the service, Bernie was invited by a war-time buddy to visit him at a hotel he was working at in the Catskills. He met Martha Abramowitz on the bus on the way to visit his friend. About a year later they married and settled in New York. Bernie worked as a laboratory technician for a medical laboratory during the day and at a shoe store at night. A few years later, Bernie opened his own medical laboratory in Uniondale, New York and in 1968 he sold his company to Revlon in what was their first foray into the business that ultimately became Labcorp. Bernie served as a consultant and operated several other laboratories, but in 1975 he and Martha moved to Florida and enjoyed a semi-retired life, until he and Martha began running a lingerie business. Bernie missed the laboratory business too much and ultimately started and operated a diagnostic laboratory and dialysis business in South Florida.
Fifteen years ago, Martha and Bernie retired (for real) to Henderson, Nevada where they enjoyed their lives with new friends and hosting family. Bernie loved to live largely. He was a dedicated golfer and loved the casinos and playing cards. He was a fiercely loyal friend to many people, was exceptionally generous and philanthropic. But more than anything, he loved his family and doted on Martha.
