C. Stanley Hunterton passed away at home on August 5, 2023. He was born September 10, 1948 in Fauquier, Virginia, to Clarence Hunterton and Adelaide Lafrenz. Stan attended Syracuse University for both his undergraduate and juris doctorate degrees. Upon graduation, he moved to Detroit, Michigan with his wife, Nancy. His entry into the legal profession, began with involvement in his first case out of law school: the disappearance of teamster Jimmy Hoffa.
This fateful assignment guided his career into the fascinating world of mob activity, where he rose to Special Attorney with the U.S. Department of Justice Organized Crime and Racketeering Section. In late 1978, Stan moved his wife, Nancy and young sons, Gabe and Nate to the community he would forever consider home. As part of the Las Vegas Strike Force, Stan prosecuted known mob associates, including those tied to Anthony “Tony the Ant” Spilotro and his Hole in the Wall gang. Another landmark investigation was that of the Argent Corporation, which ended with numerous indictments and convictions of those skimming upwards of $5.2M from the Stardust and Fremont casinos to mobsters in the Midwest. In 1984, the Hunterton family re-located to Washington, D.C. for nearly two years as Stan was appointed by President Ronald Reagan to Deputy Chief Counsel for the President’s Commission on Organized Crime. Upon his return to Las Vegas in 1986, he started his private practice Hunterton and Associates. There he focused on criminal and civil law for nearly 30 years, between serving in prominent positions at Sierra Pacific Resources (NV Energy) and the State Bar of Nevada. However, one of his favorite roles was that of an instructor at UNLV’s Boyd Law School.
While once a fellow of The American College of Trial Lawyers, listed as one the “The Best Lawyers in America” and a well-known force in the courtroom, to his family he was simply known as Dad, Papa, or Super Uncle.
Stan’s devotion to his family was always paramount and his sons remained the greatest loves of his life. He’d often regale those around the dinner table with stories of yesteryear, with his brilliance matching his wit. Whether watching mob movies and stifling his corrections for accuracy or taking loved ones on tours of the Mob Museum, he’d lend thoughtful insights, remembering as if it was yesterday. He never tired of his daughter-in-law, Elizabeth’s incessant curiosity of “all things mob” and enjoying re-living his storied experiences with her. During Aviators and Yankees games, he’d meticulously analyze each play, even predicting where at-bats would land. He instilled a love of the written word, not by only gifting his family members books, but reading the book simultaneously to discuss, often with his grandson, Cameron. He’d sit on the couch with his younger grandsons, Eli and Nathanael curled into his lap, reading aloud and patiently answering the never-ending questions about each illustration.
By example, he demonstrated the importance of community involvement, integrity, and a reverence for the law. He loved his family fiercely and will be missed the same way. Stan, the beloved brother, father, and grandfather is survived by his sister, and brother-in-law Heidi and Kevin Wynne (New York); sons, Gabe and Nate (Elizabeth) Hunterton; grandsons: Cameron, Eli and Nathanael Hunterton; former wife, Nancy Sargent Hunterton; and faithful companion, Apollo. He was preceded in death by his cherished significant other of 25 years, Barbara Mulholland.
Celebration of Stan's life will be on Monday, August 21, 2023 at 11:00 am at Palm Mortuary, 7600 S. Eastern Ave., Las Vegas, NV 89123. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be sent to WestCare's Women and Children's Campus (5659 Duncan Drive, Las Vegas, NV 89130, (702) 385-2020) because as his beloved Barbara would say, "The women and children need help more than I need flowers."
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.palmeastern.com for the Hunterton family.
