Carl Alan Elwell, 60, of Las Vegas, Nevada, left us too soon on June 7th, 2025. He entered eternal life listening to his favorite podcast with his best friend, Lady, by his side.
He was born on March 12th, 1965, at People’s Hospital in Ladd, Illinois to Carol and John Elwell. Carl grew up on a soybean and corn farm, where he learned the importance of hard work. He graduated from Hall Township High School in Spring Valley, Illinois in 1983. He loved to share stories of how he was an active member of the Eagle Scouts. During his spare time between the farm and scouts, he could be found playing basketball and competing in track. He spent summers hunting, shooting, and relaxing with his grandmother by the Illinois River. Later, he went on to University of Washington and Illinois Valley Community College in 1984.
After college, he moved to Chicago, Illinois where he met the love of his life, Maria Guevara of Cebu, in the summer of 1986. They lost their hearts to each other and married in 1989. He taught her to ski, as they went on many adventures together. In 1996, he and his family would continue their adventure by moving to Las Vegas, Nevada, where Carl became a successful realtor, even winning Realtor of the Year. Carl was also a natural with technology, specifically computers. He retired from the housing market to become a Senior Network Engineer of several notable companies.
He enjoyed simple pleasures in life--watching birds, playing with the family dogs, listening to a good podcast, and sometimes, replanting Maria’s vegetables. Carl was an avid golfer and seasoned skier. His idea of a perfect day could be spent on the course or headed up a black diamond. Carl was also an American patriot. He loved talking about politics and would always find a way to be involved.
If you asked Carl, his greatest accomplishment was not his many successful careers. It was being a father and husband. The love he had for Maria was so deep and abundant, that it was easy to embrace Maria’s children, Ernesto, Agustin, and Therese. He loved them as his own and showed them what father could be. He was supportive, caring, and kind. They are proud to call him “Dad.” He treasured every moment with them. Decades later, he became a grandfather to Lauren and Sophie. He loved being a source of laughter and joy for them. They will always remember him for his silliness and laid-back presence.
He was lovingly referred to as “Honey Bunny” by his wife, “Genie” by his granddaughter, Lauren, and “Grandpa Carl” by his youngest granddaughter, Sophie. To the dogs of the family, he was a generous treat provider and their favorite friend.
Carl had a certain cleverness about him. We could always rely on him for a quick and witty response, almost as he had just been waiting for you to give him the green light. We will miss his jokes, laughter, and smile. We are so proud to call him husband and father. He will be forever in our hearts.
He is survived by his wife, Maria Elwell; sons, Ernesto Guevara (significant other Devie), Agustin Guevara; daughter, Therese Kiyojima (husband Mark); brother, Jay Elwell; nephews, John Elwell and Jason Elwell; granddaughters, Lauren Marcelo and Sophie Guevara; grandson, Delmar Delacruz; and his loyal companions, Lady, Bella, Salt, and April.
Please, join us on June 25th, 2025 at 12:00 p.m. PDT at Palm Southwest Mortuary to celebrate the life of Carl Alan Elwell.
