Daniel Cartagena Villareal, 84, a resident of Las Vegas, went to be with his Lord, on March 10, 2020 at Nathan Adelson Hospice, after battling Advanced Parkinson’s Disease. He was born January 3, 1936, Pandacan, Manila Philippines, son to the late Gil and Regina Villareal.
While waiting for the bus, he met the love of his life Lydia Parnala Castillo and after only six months they married January 29, 1961. They had a loving marriage and were blessed with four children, eight grandchildren and two great-grandsons.
Dan graduated from Philippine College of Commerce in 1968 with a Bachelors’ Degree in Business. He worked several careers, including Gil Carlos and Associates Law Offices as a law clerk then as a Junior Management Analyst, at U.S. Industry Philippines Inc., for 10 years. He eventually ventured to the United States in 1972 where he and Lydia made their home in West Covina, California and where they raised their four children.
He became a U.S. Citizen in 1976. Dan, hardworking and principled, knew the importance of having a stable career. He retired as a Principal Detention Officer, Jail Division, for L.A.P.D, as a Sargent in 1998, after 26 years of exemplary service.
Dan’s hobbies during his lifetime, included basketball, Filipino folk dancing and golf. Though during his “Golden Years” playing golf was his favorite past time, his true passion was caring for his grandchildren. “Umpa” was a loving and doting grandfather, taking them to the mall, where they would leave with a “little something” or playing games at Nickle-Nickel.
Though Dan was a reserved man, he was depicted as a strong father figure by friends of his children. He was simple, humble, with ready a smile and a good sense of humor. He enjoyed eating donuts and coffee, watching the Golf channel, and spending time by walking the mall with Lydia.
He is survived by his wife Lydia; their children Dan, Rolando and his wife Kristi, Gina and her husband Dale, and Wendy and her husband Brian; their eight grandchildren, Troy and his wife Marisa, Luke and his wife Rachel, Adam, Marcus, Ryan, Amanda, Jake and Aaron; great-grandchildren Daniel Troy and Isaac Clark; sisters Ophelia, Estelita and Rebecca; brother Wilfredo “Dennis”; and numerous nephews and nieces.
