Earl R. Carol Jr. lost his long fight with cancer on August 15, 2013. Earl was born in New York and was raised in Chowchilla, California. Shortly after his 18th birthday he volunteered for the draft to serve his country. He attended infantry school at Ft. Polk in Louisiana and served as a Sergeant of the security detachment in South East Asia. While in Vietnam he supervised a 250-man guard mount with responsibility for entry control and construction of perimeter defenses. Earl received two Purple Hearts for wounds suffered in combat, and several other medals of valor. After attending a U.S. Army Command and General Staff College through a resident/non-resident program at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas, he became an officer in the Army National Guard, with the 1st Battalion 221st Armor in Las Vegas, Nevada, holding the rank of Captain and ultimately ending his Army career as a Major. In 1972, Earl met Donna while working at Jerry’s Nugget as a security guard; eventually marrying her in 1985. They were happily married for 28 years. Earl R. Carol III was born in 1987 and immediately became the pride of his father’s life. They became so close that he finally gave up the National Guard for a new army, the Boy Scouts. Earl and his son spent many hours together and became very close. Earl was a retired letter carrier retiring from the Silverado Station. He also was involved with the American Legion, Paradise Post 149. Earl was a people person and had many good friends in his life. He was very loyal and committed to these friendships, many lasting since early childhood. Earl was also known for his off-centered sense of humor. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
