Sorry I haven’t visited you in quite some time.  All the family has moved from Vegas and I am no longer in the USA.  Still we light a candle for you every year and pray for God to shine his light upon you.  8 years .... Sept 8th has left a deep wound in my heart.   MJ is in school now, Twanna is an RN, and I have my second child being born this month.  Life just keeps on going, but we never forget how we got where we are today.  Love is forever we miss you.

The Gentle Warrior. 

Unflappable.  Cooler than cool.  Funny as hell.  These words all come to mind when the subject is Elizabeth Tompkins.  I first met her many years back when we both worked at the MGM Mirage Call Center, which was over near the airport on Sunset.   She was thought of as an ‘anchor' employee there – someone that is so solid that they help to form the foundation of the entire department.   As Wynn was preparing to open, they began hiring lots of people from resorts around town – the best of the best.   My own work contract with MGM was about to conclude, and although I was preparing for my own move over to Wynn,  people were already being hired to staff its call center.   The thought of walking in to a ready-staffed department caused me to lose the last of my hair and resulted in many sleepless nights.  How could I be sure of having solid, reliable people on this new team?    Soon enough I was working at Wynn and one morning dialed into the test number that we had set up for the new  employees to train on.  The phone rang once and was promptly answered.   “Thaaa-nk yee-w for call-iiing Wy-nnn Rest-au-rannnt and Shooow Res-er-vayyy-tions…my name is Elizzz-a-beth, how may I assist you?”  That slow and deliberate drawl of delivery, carried out over so many syllables, was unmistakeable - and like music to my ears.  It was Elizabeth Tompkins!   And she was working with me at Wynn!   How lucky could I get?  

Over the next eight years, Elizabeth helped us to create a five-star resort service experience unlike any other in Las Vegas.  Our team worked hard, but we also got to enjoy some pretty hilarious moments together.  Halloween costume contests (she wore a football jersey, of course);  Woodstock hippie festivals;  too many potluck events to count.   But it was the ticket on-sales for concerts by Beyonce and Garth Brooks where everyone in our department solidly bonded as a family.   The Garth on-sale, in particular was so intense that the volume of phone calls literally sent the entire hotel's phone system crashing down!   It took several hours for us to cope through all of the confusion and tens of thousands of phone calls.   Although the tickets were all sold,  tons of phone calls kept pouring in.  Lots of unhappy people.   People that had been waiting hours to hear a voice.  Colleagues were now exhausted and spent, feeling like they had gone ten rounds in a prize fight.   As I made my way about the room checking on team members, I came upon Elizabeth.  “How did we do, Elizabeth?  Are you feeling OK?”  “Oh yes,” she replied, “that was something.  I'm ready to go home.”  I walked away thinking to myself, “Quiet, gentle warrior” – and wishing that we had ten more Elizabeth Tompkins.  

We may never know the divine reason why she is not with us today.  And we certainly don't know how to come to terms with our sorrow and despair.  But this much I do know:  Elizabeth came to work each day and was committed to creating great experiences for our customers.   She never got involved in drama, would walk a mile around it.   She never criticized others, at the most would just shake her head and keep quietly to herself.  And just when we needed it the very most, she always managed to sneak in a good one-liner with precision timing.   She was observant, she was honest, and she kept her eye on what was really important.  The clock.  So she could get home to the things in life that really mattered the most to her – Tim, her daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren.

If there are phone lines at the pearly gates, I imagine Elizabeth is now on staff answering.  The long drawl is still the same.  And the Lord is fortunate to have such an anchor employee and wonderful colleague and friend on his team.  

Elizabeth – you are truly cherished and will be missed by all of your colleagues at Wynn/Encore.

Elizabeth,I remember you with love,light,admiration,and laughter. You always could make me laugh and lighten up when I needed that. I am honored that I was able to know you and work with you at Wynn.  May God be with your family in this time of sorrow.

Elizabeth, you will be missed. You were a great lady. I loved to sit and listen to your professionalism while you spoke on the phone to our guests. May god bless you and your family.
