Elvira "Vera" D'Amato passed away July 25, 2014, she was 84 years old. She was born in Brooklyn, New York. She was a 27-year resident of Las Vegas. Vera will be sorrowfully missed by family and friends. She is survived by her husband Louis of 60 years; son Salvatore; daughter Katherine; grandkids, Joseph, Louis, Michele; and great grandkids, Arianna, Stefano and Brooklyn. My mommy. That would sound funny to a lot of people, but that is what me and my brother called her. When my mommy was well she would go out to the casinos and play her 5-cent poker machines. She could play those machines for hours. My mommy would talk to anybody that sat down next to her. That's where she made some of the friends she has today in Vegas by playing next to them. Daddy would have to always get her to leave or she would be there forever. When she would come over on Sunday after playing in the casino, we would say "Awooch", that was her nickname, how did you do today? She would say the same thing every time, "I lost $20.00." How can you lose $20.00 every time, she would laugh. She said that because she didn't want daddy to know how much she really lost, but daddy didn't care what she lost. My mommy loved sitting on her recliner and watch game shows and the old time shows and movies. I would call her up and say awooch watcha doin? She would say "Watching T.V." then she would laugh. My mommy would never want to bother any of us for anything. Dad would say let me call Kathy or Michele; she would say no, they have enough to do. She never would listen to us when we tell her you are not bothering us, but she still wouldn't. Sunday dinners are the best. Friends and family would come over. We would sit around the table and talk and laugh. Sometimes mommy would want to tell a joke she heard. Either she would mess it up or laugh before the punch line which made us laugh even more. If you would meet my mommy for the first time, you would think you knew her for years. She was so sweet and easy to talk to. I've never met anyone who had one bad word to say about my mom. Everyone who is a friend of my mom loved her. She would never say a bad word about anybody. My cousins and I would try to get her to say something bad about someone, she would just mumble and shrug her shoulders. We would yell at her and laugh. The great grandkids would ask nana can you come in the playroom and play with us. Even when she wasn't feeling good she would always go in there and play with them. My mommy was an angel on earth, so she's definitely an angel in heaven looking down on us. We will all miss her and love her dearly.
