I will never forget my last conversation with Erich. It was two years ago, but it always stuck with me.  We were surprised to see each other in one of the division conference rooms. We both smiled big and spent the next 20 minutes catching up after the brief was done. Erich was his usual self: interested, considerate, and selfless. As always, he was a joy to talk to.  We hadn't worked together for about three years, but catching up made it seem like no time had passed. 

When I think of Erich, I see his smiling face and remember how reliable he was to help whenever something was needed. Due to his shy nature, we fondly called him the "Silent Assassin." He quietly got any job done in a succinct, quality manner.  He was also a total stud on the basketball court. Making shots and passes that none of the rest of us could even consider. 

Finding out about Erich's death shook me to the core. Despite the time since we had talked or worked together, I still considered him a friend and someone I was grateful for having known. The world is lesser without him in it. His family and his soul will be in my prayers. 

Erich was one of the kindest officers I had the opportunity to serve with in the Army at Fort Hood. I’ll never forget his laugh and his smile which often was present even in the most frustrating and challenging of times at work, but especially during the few times we got to spend together as friends outside of the office. My condolences to his family as I know that this is a tremendous loss of such a wonderful person. 

Well that explains why I did not receive a response to my message. I am truly broken up by this. I had the privilege of not only working with Erich but also spending some free time with him. I taught him how to scuba dive and we had a few dive adventures, to include him losing a fin on the lazy river in San Antonio. He also tricked me into the only surprise birthday party I have ever had. He was a good man, a good friend and I am going to miss him.

Dear Audrey and Phil and family:

Ray and I and my family were really saddened to hear about Erich's passing. We remember him fondly. We knew him since he was a child who grew up into a wonderful young man. Lately, we had not seen him but we would hear once in a while about his comings and goings around the world. We were proud to know him. 

We remember Erich always as a quiet, reserved and respectful child. Yet his eyes would dance when it was time to go in adventures with the other boys. We remember his soft laughter when recounting what had happened in any particular day. We were always happy that our Dan had him as a very good friend.

We cannot imagine not having him with you but please know that the ten or fifteen years that we saw him left an imprint in our hearts forever. He truly was a great guy. Our deepest condolences.

I am so sorry for your loss. I didn’t know Erich very well but I knew him well enough to know that he was kind and patient. He volunteered to be my partner while your family TRIED to teach me how to play PINOCHLE. That was no small task and he didn’t even scream at me or anything. What a guy!!! I will always remember him fondly and be glad that ours paths crossed even if only for a short while.  Your entire family is in my prayers.

  This is so heartbreaking, there are no words that I could say that would comfort you on the terrible loss of your Son and Brother.
