Ernest was born in Fayetteville County, Indiana on July 5, 1926 to Ernest Porter and Gladys Marie Porter née Lyons. Upon graduating from high school, he enlisted in the Naval Air Corps in 1944 at the age 17, an accomplishment that he was proud of throughout his life. Training as an aviation cadet during World War II fostered a lifelong love of aircraft and air travel.
After completing a B.S. in Mathematics at Miami University in Ohio, Ernest went on to train as an actuary, working his way up in the insurance industry throughout the course of his storied career. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE), a Fellow of the Life Management Institute (FLMI) and a member of the American Academy of Actuaries (MAAA). He sat on countless boards, and became CEO of three different life insurance companies.
Ernest was predeceased by his loving wife of 72 years, Nancy Porter, who passed away in July 2021. He is survived by his three children and is lovingly remembered by his six grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
Ernest supported many charities throughout his life, especially those who worked to support military service members and those who worked to preserve and remember World War II. In lieu of flowers or gifts, please consider making a donation in his name to the National World War II Museum (https://www.nationalww2museum.org/give), the Wounded Warrior Project (https://www.woundedwarriorproject.org) or any other organization that supports and remembers our service men and women.
