“Dave”
October 29, 1944 – October 5, 2026
Fred David Higgins, lovingly known as Dave, passed away on October 5, 2026, at the age of 81, surrounded by his loving family, who remained by his side until the end.
Born on October 29, 1944, in Keokuk County, Iowa, Dave was the son of Warren Wilson “Bill” Higgins and June Iva Higgins. He grew up alongside his siblings, Linda Donahue (Brad), Julie Winzeler (Ken), Tracy Kamp (Joel), Jayne Merritt, and his brother Michael, who preceded him in death on November 25, 1966, at the age of 20.
Dave was drafted into the United States Army on May 16, 1966. After serving 6 years, 11 months, and 2 days on active duty, he later reenlisted on March 21, 1975. He continued his military career until his retirement on April 30, 1988, completing over 20 years of active-duty service to his country.
On October 10, 1983, Dave married Elsa, the love of his life. Their love story began when Dave’s coworker at the bowling alley, who was Elsa’s aunt, showed him pictures, and Dave spotted Elsa’s picture. He took leave to meet her and traveled to Southern California, where they met just a few days before deciding to make the trip to Las Vegas to get married. When Elsa’s family picked Dave up from the airport, his suitcase even fell open, making for an unforgettable first impression! The adventures continued as they drove to Las Vegas, where they were so focused on finding the courthouse that they even ran a red light along the way. What started with a picture turned into a marriage that lasted 42 years. Dave passed away just five days before their 43rd wedding anniversary, a reminder of the many years of love, laughter, and memories they shared. Dave loved Elsa dearly and often joked that she thought he was crazy, but he loved her anyway. His sense of humor was a special part of who he was and brought smiles to those around him.
In 1996, Dave purchased a home in Henderson, Nevada, where he enjoyed the comforts of everyday life. He loved baking, a passion inspired by his mother, June, who was known for her pies, chocolate chip cookies, and homemade cinnamon rolls. Dave enjoyed his familiar daily routines, from waking up at 5 a.m. to make coffee to playing games on his laptop before moving to his iPad. He also enjoyed watching sports on television and typically called it a night around 9 p.m. These simple pleasures were part of what made Dave so special to those who knew and loved him.
Dave found happiness in life's simple pleasures. His humor, familiar routines, love for Elsa, and the memories he created with his family will be treasured for generations to come.
Dave will be deeply missed by all who loved him. Though he is no longer with us, his laughter, the memories he created, and the love he shared will forever remain in the hearts of his family.
Forever loved, forever remembered, and always in our hearts.
