

FRED ALBRECHT Fredrick C. Albrecht, 71, passed away Friday, Feb. 5, 2016, after a long battle with cancer. Born April 19, 1944, in Youngstown, Ohio, Fred had a 38-year UNLV related career from 1970-2007. He began as an assistant basketball coach and later served as the head coach of the highest ranked UNLV men's tennis team, twice as an interim university director of athletics and as a vice president ot UNLV from 1997 to 2007. In 1973, Fred founded and was credited for the creation of the Tam Alumni Center, where he served for decades as the director of alumni relations. In 2012, he was awarded the UNLV Presidents Medal and was inducted into the UNLV Athletic Hall of Fame. He remained active with UNLV even after his retirement, amongst other things, raising funds for the Jerry Tarkanian Memorial statue. Fred had an undergraduate degree from Kent State University, where he was inducted into the Kent State Basketball Hall of Fame. He also obtained mater's degree in education from UNLV. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Connie; daughter, Michelle Castro; grandson, Andrew Castro; sister, Carol Pinney, her husband, Pat, and their daughter, Laura; sister-in-law, Dixie Morrissey; and brother-in-law, Manny Morrissey. Fred will also be missed by loving nephews Michael Weems, Bobby Weems, and Steven Weems. A celebration of life is pending.
