He and his twin brother Larry were born on February 25, 1939 in Albion, PA to Eugene Sr. and Thelma Knapp. Garry was raised a farm boy and was a gandy dancer before enlisting in the USAF. He’d tell you he enlisted in the AF because the Navy recruiter was out at lunch.
Garry met the love of his life Anne while stationed in England. They were married on June 18, 1960 and had two daughters.
After 20 years of service, he retired and spent his days golfing, doing woodwork and photography, serving others and clowning around as Patches the clown. He was known for his infectious smile and witty personality. He seldom met a stranger, as he talked to everyone as if he’d known them forever.
Garry is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Anne (Howell) Knapp; daughters Jacquie (Mike) Alford and Debi Wideen; grandchildren Sydney (Nick) Patapoff, Cameron Alford, Becca Alford, Shelby Alford and Jacob Wideen; great-grandson Noah Wideen; sister Denese Hosack and brother Eugene Knapp, Jr.
A private graveside service will be in May, with a celebration of life to follow later at Central Church.
We did not know this morning, what sorrow the day would bring.
When a heart of gold stopped beating, we could not do a thing.
It broke our hearts to lose you, but you do not go alone.
For part of us went with you the day God called you home.
