Raised in the Christian faith, Jamie accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age. Her faith remained a guiding force throughout her life’s journey.
Always bright, curious, and determined, Jamie excelled in all she chose to pursue. Her academic achievements reflected her commitment to excellence, graduating early from Chaparral High School through advanced placement studies and continuing her education at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where she earned her Master’s degree at an exceptionally young age.
Throughout her life’s travels, Jamie experienced much and touched many lives. One thing everyone knew about her was that she never met a stranger. She cultivated deep and meaningful relationships, building a circle of friends who became family. The culmination of her personal growth and spiritual journey was reflected in her decision to embrace a new name that embodied her life’s purpose. In 2025, Gem IAM Grateful emerged with a renewed desire to pour into others and serve her community with greater intention.
A musician, lyricist, poet, scholar, activist, humanitarian, and passionate advocate for justice, Gem consistently sought opportunities to uplift those around her. Whether through her words, talents, advocacy, or simple acts of kindness, she freely shared her gifts wherever they could bring comfort, hope, or encouragement.
Although Gem explored many occupational and entrepreneurial endeavors throughout her life, she most recently served as a Shop Steward for the Amalgamated Transit Union. In that role, she became a trusted advocate, problem solver, and voice for her coworkers. She took great pride in helping others, standing up for fairness, and ensuring that those around her were treated with dignity and respect, all while faithfully serving her community as a public transit operator.
On June 16, 2026, just three days shy of her 44th birthday, Gem transitioned from this earthly life into eternal rest.
She was preceded in death by her beloved brothers, James Dean Thompson and Ryan Nathaniel Thompson, as well as her grandparents.
Left to cherish her memory are her parents, Shermone Renee Freeman of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Tyrone Negel Thompson Sr. of Phoenix, Arizona; her siblings, Kathryn Thompson of Laveen, Arizona, Tyrone Thompson II of Roy, Utah, Sunni Thompson of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and Keisha Blair of Memphis, Tennessee; her lifelong friend and God-sister, LaTasha Jackson of Las Vegas, Nevada; and her precious jewels, her nieces and nephews: Rhyen Thompson, Bryan Blair, Martell McKinney, Isaiah Thompson, Tyrone Thompson III, Aniyah Blair, Anthony Thompson Sr., James Thompson Jr., Bishop Blair, Aliyah Thompson, Amiyah Thompson, Aaron Kirby II, Ahmar Thompson, Santi Kirby, Aalijah Kirby, Aahmad Kirby, Elijah Blair, Aliviah Thompson, and Aarik Thompson.
Gem was also blessed with a large and loving “Framily,” a community of friends who became family through shared experiences, unwavering support, and enduring love. The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to all who have offered prayers, kindness, and encouragement during this difficult time.
Though she left us far too soon, we find comfort in knowing that her life was lived with purpose, compassion, and gratitude. We pray in agreement that God was pleased with her journey and has welcomed her into His eternal embrace.
“Well done, good and faithful servant.” – Matthew 25:23
