

James A. “Chops/Coach” Portese from Niagara Falls, New York and resided in Las Vegas, Nevada passed away September 24, 2023, in LA. He graduated from William Penn University in Oskaloosa, IA with a bachelor’s in education and was a member of the Delta Beta Phi Fraternity. After his graduation, he went on to play professional football in the USFL as a center/long snapper for the Arizona Wranglers. After pro football, for over 30 years, he took his talents as security and safety to The Golden Nugget, The Mirage, Bellagio and Wynn. He enjoyed making an impact in young lives by coaching high school girls softball and football for various schools around Las Vegas, as well as the Lil Rebels girl’s softball team and the girl’s Italian International Softball Team. He has various championship rings from high school, college, and pro football. He has also been inducted into the William Penn University Athletic Hall of Fame and the Niagara Falls Sports Hall of Fame. He leaves behind his loving wife, Shostocka “Shay” Portese (Matlock) and his devoted daughter Brianna “Bri” Portese, as well as countless friends, co-workers, players and coaches. His loss will be greatly felt.
