Born on April 25, 1947, John was raised in Dorchester, Massachusetts, the son of Jan Szymanski and Aniela Smolinska. From an early age, he displayed the strength, determination, and natural leadership that would define his remarkable life. Those who knew him often found themselves following his lead, and one lifelong friend lovingly summarized his influence by saying, "He was our leader, and without him many of our lives would have been much different."
As a young man, John answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Marine Corps. He proudly served during the Vietnam War, carrying with him the courage, discipline, and resilience that became hallmarks of his character throughout the rest of his life.
Following his military service, John embarked on a life filled with adventure and hard work. He served as a Merchant Marine and worked aboard fishing ships out of Portland, Maine, experiences that further strengthened his independent spirit and love for challenge. His professional journey eventually led him into the mining industry taking him places like Tonopah, Nevada. He became a trailblazing innovator and respected legend. Among his many accomplishments, he engineered and built what was, at the time, the largest machinery designed to separate gold from other ores, helping advance the industry through vision and determination.
John's path was not without obstacles. He openly acknowledged the struggles he faced throughout his life, including battles with addiction. Yet perhaps one of his greatest legacies is the example he set through perseverance and willpower. He achieved sobriety and remained sober for nearly fifty years before his passing. His life stands as a testament that success is not defined by never falling, but by rising and achieving. He inspired countless others by proving that there are no excuses in life—only opportunities to grow, persevere, and move forward.
His family often said that John lived the life of ten men. His adventures, accomplishments, and experiences could fill volumes. Yet despite all he achieved and all the places life took him, he never allowed his pursuits to compromise what mattered most: his family.
John also cherished lifelong friendships formed during his upbringing in Dorchester. Through the decades, despite military service, travel, business ventures, and the many chapters of his life, he remained close to the friends of his youth. Their enduring bonds were a testament to his loyalty and the profound impact he had on those fortunate enough to know him.
Of all his accomplishments, John was most proud of his marriage of more than fifty years to his beloved wife, Halina Husiatynska. Together they built a life rooted in love, commitment, and devotion. He was a proud and loving father to his daughters, Roseanne Szymanski-Bissattini and LtCol Aniela Szymanski-Cosgrove, USMC, whose successes and happiness brought him immense joy.
Perhaps nowhere was John's gentle heart more evident than in his role as grandfather. He was deeply devoted to his grandchildren, Diego Bissattini and Scarlett Anna Lynne Cosgrove. He cherished every moment spent with them and took immense pride in watching them grow.
John was predeceased by his brother, George Szymanski, a fellow United States Marine Corps veteran. He is survived by his beloved wife, Halina; his daughters, Roseanne and Aniela; his grandchildren, Diego and Scarlett; and his nephews, Robert Szymanski and George Henry Szymanski, along with many extended family members, friends, and colleagues whose lives were enriched by knowing him.
John leaves behind a legacy of courage, leadership, resilience, innovation, and unwavering love for his family. He demonstrated throughout his life that one's past does not determine one's future, and that true strength comes from perseverance, accountability, and commitment to those we love.
Though he will be profoundly missed, his example will continue to inspire all who knew him. His stories, wisdom, humor, and indomitable spirit will live on through his family, friends, and the many lives he touched along the way.
Semper Fidelis. Marine. Husband. Father. Uncle. Grandfather. Leader. Friend. Legend.
May he rest in peace.
